Well if he's only getting $2 million per I think Morey could move him fairly easily if he had to. So I don't think he's giving up much flexibility.
Thats not what it is though. Smith is free and It would be Dragic as a 3 month rental for DMO + filler.... which I think would be a bad move
your basing this off his performance on Atlanta teams that ran off the talent surrounding him and horford and actively made him a focal point on the offense to save a buck? Then got overpaid by a bad gm along with another incoming talented but deficient player which put the pistons into perennial crap mode killing the motivation of all players and having disgruntled pf's on lame duck contracts? sounds like the ass end of the stick to me. one that pays handsomely mind you. but i'd definitely give that player a value contract on a great team to get him motivated and playing in the proper role again.
Smith on a cheap contract would be the very definition of low risk-high reward. He'd naturally come back to the 4 spot where he excelled at ATL for years. I've watched Pistons games and IMO, he just wasn't used correctly, especially not at the 3. Smith has lost some athleticism, but he can still play some individual D and block shots. Our interior defense would be scary. Also, selling him the starting spot wouldn't be bad, as you can bring D-Mo off the bench to play the 4/5 spots and it even helps his post game since he won't have to share space/touches with Dwight. Ideal scenario: sign J-Smoove, cut Dorsey, T. Jones+Shved+Pelicans pick for Dragic. However, with T. Jones injury most likely keeping him out for an extended period, I can see D-Mo+NYK 2nd rounder+Shved to PHX for Dragic (providing J-Smoove is holding up the starting 4 spot well enough). I don't think Morey would overcompensate on a potential Dragic rental giving up D-Mo AND the Pelicans pick. If we did end up losing D-Mo, we'll have a hole at the 4-5 backup spots but who's to say Morey won't work his genius again? Of course, this is dependent on J-Smoove coming here and us not getting Bosh'd again.
On Weds, he will likely clear waivers. Which means he would be a FA, thus we don't have to give up anything but our Bi-Annual salary.
How can anyone have a problem with signing Smith to the BAE...this is the type of move that championship teams make. It's a perfect low risk high reward kind of move. I know he has all kinds of question marks but i'm on board with bringing him in and taking that chance. Now the DMO-dragic aspect i'm not to keen on.

Honestly a second year of josh smith at 2 mil would be a great trade piece for morey too. He may not be worth what he was getting paid... But he's a good player.
Worth monitoring: <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-partner="tweetdeck"><p>Heat probably need Smith the most, plus could have a DPE coming soon if they do a meniscus repair for McRoberts and he's out the year.</p>— Nate Duncan (@NateDuncanNBA) <a href="https://twitter.com/NateDuncanNBA/status/547104670083055616">December 22, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
As someone said, would you trade DMo + filler for Smith on a 2M/yr contract + Dragic? Absolutely. Let's not pretend that DMo is the perfect fit in the starting lineup. Yes, as the 6th man he'd be perfect but we improve defensively AND make an opportunity to add a legit second creator. Have to make these moved IMO. And ASAP so we can build chemistry for the remainder of the year. We would still have talented youngsters in TJ, Papa, Johnson...
We'll see where his head is at. Is it about the money (which he's already getting) or playing for a contender?
crap...the heat have the most to offer they worry me... josh smith pegs me as the type of dude to go after more money/beaches
I'm psyched. He has a DRPM of +3.2 this year. His offense is no worse than Terrence Jones when he plays in position. He's a horrid 3 point shooter this year (25%) but has shot as high as 33% and I wonder how much of that is the offensive situation in Detroit. Even at 33%, he would demand some attention and create spacing for Dwight/Harden. More importantly, if he buys in to the system, he would be taking the majority of his baskets near the rim, where he can still be an elite talent. For 2 million and change, can you do any better??
