A couple of points of clarification:

    1) Teams that are under the salary cap at the time of a trade cannot receive a trade exception from the trade (even if they end up over the cap after the trade).

I believe Detroit is a couple of million under the cap so they wouldn't receive a trade exception from the proposed deal.

    2) Even if Detroit was over the cap and eligible to receive a trade exception, that exception would be equal to the amount of Monroe's cap figure. That means that the TE an over the cap Pistons team would get would be $5.4M rather than $8M.

Just remove the TE that you show Detroit receiving and the deal still works.

Detroit would want to shed some crappy contracts if they shipped out Greg

Monroe would fit in nicely in phoenix. Dragic is who I feel is our main target. If we can swing that kind of trade with detroit and phoenix this team would just be flat out ready to contend. Even if we had to off terence jones to sweeten the deal houston has to do it. When Papa gets back he will get some minutes at the PF. That trade exemption can be used to acquire an aging vet to be used in the case of emergency and leadership for our front court similar to what Jason Terry brings to our back court.

    C-HOWARD/Dmo/ Dorsey
    Pf-Dmo/Papa/TBlack
    SF-Ariza/Papa/Harden
    Sg-Harden/Dragic/Terry
    Pg-Dragic/Beverly/Terry

If we already gave up Canaan I don't think we still need to give up Terrence as well

Greg Monroe is worth a 1st round pick IF you got his bird rights. But without his bird rights, what point is there in trading for him? You're almost guaranteed to lose him.

Agreed, not that Monroe isn't worth a 1st but Detroit really lost their leverage and can't really ask for that much since the team acquiring him receives no additional benefit other than just getting him now. If a team has enough to sign him in FA why give anything up and just sign him then?

I'd give the nop pick for dragic, but I don't see why PHX would effectively give dragic for Monroe when PHX actually has more leverage with dragic than Detroit does with Monroe.

Maybe a couple 2nd rounders to Detroit (one from us and one from PHX)
NOP pick and Monroe to PHX
    Dragic to HOU

To PHX: Greg Monroe, Nick Johnson, NOLA pick
To DET: Jason Terry, Terrance Jones, Clint Capela
To HOU: Goran Dragic, Josh Smith

PG: Dragic / Beverley / Canaan
    SG: Harden / Daniels
SF: Ariza / Papanikolaou / Garcia
PF: Smith / Motiejunas / Black
    C: Howard / Dorsey

That, my friends, is the best team in basketball.

With out question Goran is a huge upgrade. He is an elite finisher at the rim, an elite 3pt shooter and a guy who can take the ball handling duties off of Harden's shoulders (if not when Harden is in the game then when he is on the bench). Goran's ball handling and ability to run the team would allow Harden longer rests on the bench. Ideally you would still use Beverly to play when both Harden or Dragic sits.

You guys who think Josh Smith is any good should really watch him play. Also talk to some Pistons or Hawks fans. He isn't a good fit on any team that ever wants to win.

On that proposed roster, there's no way he would start over DMo. And he's the kind of guy who would cause locker-room problems if you had him coming off the bench.

I wouldn't even trade Dorsey/Garcia for Josh Smith.

+1. We would be better off playing DMo 36+ and have Black and Dorsey pick up the slack than put Smith out there.

We don't know when T Jones is coming back and he would be an upgrade.

Pistons ain't getting crap for Monroe. Detroit screwed the pooch with that one. From Phoenix's side, they could trade Dragic to us straight up for the pick and then pick up Monroe in the off-season with their cap space.

Any trade for Greg Monroe would involve significant assets from the other side. There is no way that the piston are going to trade Monroe for a first round pick that many teams, if they wanted to, could just buy off another team.

    This rumor is so bogus.

Josh Smith doesn't fit with this team at all and we don't have the same problems we had on defense last year. Don't want!
