It's crazy how deep the PG position has been in recent years. Early 2000s you had so many scrub PGs starting for teams which would be bench players or barely in the league now.
For what we ask for our PG and at the price he comes at, it's hard to imagine many better options. But just looking at each PG in a vacuum it's hard to imagine many starters you wouldn't take over Bev. That's the beauty of basketball though, some guys fit perfect in certain situations and would be nothing in others.
If all Beverly does for this team is play tough nosed defense and hit timely 3 pointers then we have the starting PG we need to win a championship. This is something that Derek Fisher always did for the Lakers when he played there. They won 5 titles with him as starting PG. So, it doesn't really matter where you rank him among NBA point guards, we don't need him to be Chris Paul or Steph Curry. When you combine what Beverly gives us and the instant offense of Canaan, Rockets are good at PG. We shouldn't be looking for an upgrade here right now. The biggest weakness of our team is a big man who can shoot the ball, spread the floor and make FT's. If we can get a guy who can do this effectively then we will be a complete team.
His weakness is he lacks vision, he misses way too many open opportunities but besides his one on one defense and tenacity he's also a very underrated rebounder. Even if we somehow were able to get someone like Dragic, I would love to keep this guy as the 3rd guard. He's definitely an asset to this ball club.
When will people like you ever understand, there can only be so many stars on a team. We don't need a star PG, we need a serviceable PG with a decent backup, which we have right now.
He is like parsons. You love him because of his contract. If some team like the lakers goes goes for him then he is no longer top 20 in my book. This is a salary driven league and all of those guys you mentioned make 6-15 times what bev makes.
Top 10 most wanted if we were talking a out building a team. That salary, defense, and 3 pt shooting? Are you kidding me. He is a good pg to have in a star driven ball dominant league.
I will go with this one. But, since the Rockets put money in the other positions, Beverley is a nice fit for the Rockets. -- Can't get an attacker? Get s stopper.
I disagree with anyone who says we don't need a PG who can create. There is too much pressure on Harden to create all of our offense. We need someone to help with that load and to run the offense when he sits. Dragic or Lowry would be perfect. That said, Bev is the perfect 3rd guard to play off of Harden and someone like Dragic/Lowry. Doesn't need the ball to be effective. Hustles all day. Good shooter. Great defense. But I don't think we're going anywhere until we add another perimeter creator. Getting Canaan and Papanikolau back will help, but I don't think they're the answer either.
By win shares per 48, the current season's rankings are: 1) Westbrook 2) Curry 3) Paul 4) Lowry 5) Lillard 6) Conley 7) Irving 8) Teague 9) Beverley 10) Wall 11) Collison 12) Holiday 13) Knight 14) Williams 15) Parker 16) Bledsoe 17) Dragic 18) R. Jackson 19) Lawson 20) Rose (notable omissions: Kemba, Rondo, Rubio) Now of course WS is going to slightly overrate a guy when he's shooting an unsustainable 46% from 3. But to throw out the names of totally inefficient players like Kemba, MCW, Lawson, etc as better than Bev swings too far the other way if you ask me. Efficiency matters - you just can't take Bev's current efficiency as fully representative given him suddenly shooting like an all-time great.
Win Shares also includes Defensive Win Shares which is a horribly misleading stat. It is based almost entirely on team defense, not individual. Granted, Bev actually is a good defender, but other good defensive PG's will be underrated if their teams aren't as good on that end as ours is.
That list has Holiday and Knight over Bledsoe, Dragic, and Rose? I know Rose has been sitting out a ton of games this year but maybe it's just due to the small sample size. Either way, I think maybe only 3 or 4 teams of those respective PGs are willing to do a straight up PG for PG trade for Bev (hypothetically without regards to salary cap). I think Bev is in the perfect place here in Houston because we already have a Harden. Now if we only had a Dwight and Ariza on our team, I'd say our need for a guy like Lowry or Dragic would be a lot more critical. So in a way, Harden's play-making abilities is subsidizing the lack of playmaking from Bev.
I agree with your list except with respect to Rubio. He's trash IMHO. Send him back to Europe. I think the argument can be made that Thomas is beter than Rubio, and that Thomas is better than Beverly, but I think that Beverly is better than Knight, Walker and Jennings.
WS/48 is a better gauge because it accounts for games/minute disparities. Beverley is 10th in WS/48. However the whole concept of win shares is team based. Great players are unduly penalized if they play on a poor team with no other superstar to help them make the team a winner. For instance, Tarik Black is rated ahead of David West. But everybody knows Black is not better than David West. Win shares really are a measurement of how much a particular player contribute to his team wins. In my humble opinion, a better way to measure Beverley's value to this team is to look at him in head to head matchups against the upper echelon point guards and see how he has done against them. An in-depth study of that data (I have done it) will reveal what we all know to be true by watching the games. A healthy Bev impacts our win/loss column big time against those guys. He waters down their efficiency (Lillard, Parker, CP3, Lowry, and even Curry somewhat) and he drives them bananas (WESTBROOK big time).
