Can someone please explain to me again how teams protect certain players from the minor league portions of the Rule 5 Draft? Is it just promoting those players to Triple-A?
We also took Jason Garcia from Red Sox but it seems we're trading him to O's for cash. Didn't know you could trade.
IIRC a club has both a major league and minor league 40 man roster. After so many years (5?), a minor league player must be put on one of the 40 man rosters or made available in the Rule V drafts.
I think that is how we got MarGo. Last year we picked for San Diego and then traded that pick for Anthony Bass.
Well, if nothing else, between that cash and the cash they receive for all their own players selected in the Rule 5 Draft, the Astros will be able to throw one hell of a Holiday Party for their personnel this year!

so I don't know much about the Rule V draft or the odds of someone making it /returning back to the original team. Someone help me out: --Are we mad we lost these three? (i.e. were they going to be major contributors any time soon?) --What is the likelihood we get 1,2, or all three back? --What the hell do the Astros do with $75K in cash. Hire a new social media twitterer? I don't get these small dollar transactions when players are getting $100M + deals; seems like thats the cost of a few bottles of champagne at the after party
He doesn't have to be a starter. He can be the 25th player on the team. If the Rangers don't think they can compete next year, they can afford to waste a roster spot on him.
If the Rangers have another year like last year, they're gonna need that roster spot. I, for one, hope they do :grin: Go 'stros!!
Or it could be used for the bottles AT the club WHEN you are signing these $100M deals. I am under the impression that all free agent signings are done this way nowadays.
I too think DDJ won't make it on the Rangers. Good chance he doesn't get past ST. Gustave will also struggle to stay. Rollins has the best chance as a specialist.
Probably, but he doesn't need to be a starter. He just needs to be a 5th OFer, pitch runner and emergency 2B. I'd say most people are at least somewhat upset that DeShields wasn't protected. He may not be a ML contributor soon but his combination of tools (elite speed, avg hit tool), past minor league production (prior 10hr/100steal season), and bloodlines ensured he was going to be taken. Players with his upside are rarely unprotected for the Rule V. Gustave is pretty much a near certainty to return, as possibly as spring training. The Red Sox are competing for the playoffs and likely won't carry a guy who hasn't thrown above LoA. Rollins is better than a 2/3's chance of returning because the Jays are similarly trying to compete and Rollins doesn't have the elite stuff to keep giving him chances. DDJ is the most likely to stick on his new club because the Rangers are going to be bad and he's got elite tools worth trying to hold on to him. That being said he's also probably better than a 50/50 shot to return because he's just not ready for show.
