    Saw this.

Thought it was a shameless attempt at establishing himself as some sort of world superpower.

Tin foil hat theory, Musk and Hawking have been paid by Tron and the Terminator franchise for their service. Never underestimate Hollywood.

dude, his place amongst the leading minds in society is vastly overrated and several brighter minds are doing great work without the notoriety.

his physical impairments have created a strong marketability and he's done great things for the disabled community.

a poster in this thread joked about him updating his voice. Hawking won't do this because he's heard that children in need of voice assistance want his voice. he's generally just a good man, but again, he's not the person I look to for groundbreaking thoughts in quantum physics or string theory.

He's generally just a headline catcher. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

people like Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, and Hawking have all been rumbling about this. Incidentally, the former two are investors in AI startups on the very edge of the technology, so they know more about what's hiding behind non-disclosure agreements than most of us ever will.

I'm not smart enough to say who's flat out wrong or most accurate. No one really knows, but I would think the minds of Hawking and others are far ahead of most of us.

Not that I know anything, but sometimes I feel like he says things just for the publicity.

If you mean A_3P0's fear, I agree.

If you mean an artificial sentience in the cloud that can make decisions and gather data, I disagree.

Elon Musk and Ray Kurzweil agree with Hawking and they are pretty smart dudes too. AI is potentially a species-ender for us and it's coming within the lifetime of most posters here.

As long as there are power buttons, I'm not worried about a thing. I don't play that ish. If my electronics and gadgets start acting up and trying to kill me I'm gong to turn them off.

We should be concerned with the singularity -- advances in quantum computing is the key that may allow the genie out of the bottle.
    _____

The technological singularity hypothesis is that accelerating progress in technologies will cause a runaway effect wherein artificial intelligence will exceed human intellectual capacity and control, thus radically changing or even ending civilization in an event called the singularity.[1] Because the capabilities of such an intelligence may be impossible to comprehend, the technological singularity is an occurrence beyond which events are unpredictable or even unfathomable.

Proponents of the singularity typically postulate an "intelligence explosion",[5][6] where superintelligences design successive generations of increasingly powerful minds, that might occur very quickly and might not stop until the agent's cognitive abilities greatly surpass that of any human.

Kurzweil predicts the singularity to occur around 2045[7] whereas Vinge predicts some time before 2030.[8] At the 2012 Singularity Summit, Stuart Armstrong did a study of artificial general intelligence (AGI) predictions by experts and found a wide range of predicted dates, with a median value of 2040.

Perhaps you need to think about it a little more. What if there are several groups who have no intention of switching off the power. Don't assume only responsible people & governments will have access to advanced AI.
