I've never watched Wheeler Dealers, to be honest. I record so many shows, I finally had to put a limit to what I record. lol. Most of the shows I watch are just to see various cars from all kinds of generations just to get a feel for what I may like and what kind of prices they're fetching for doing whatever is being done to them. Like I said, I never watched Wheeler Dealers, so most of these shows may be the kind of shows you said you don't like :

Overhaulin' (I stopped watching this a year or two ago but need to start again... Chip Foose is a hot rod design god)
    Kounting Cars
b****in' Rides (love this show... they get into a little more detail about what they do, but probably not as much as you'd want. They make some really nice stuff.)
Fast 'N Loud (probably my least favorite because they basically are flipping cars by buying junk, painting it up and selling for a profit (the "put lipstick on a pig" approach), but I watch it anyway... they're based in Dallas)

    A couple things to consider.

How "Classic" are we talking about? Cars before the 80's are less reliable for a variety of reasons. However you can do something like get a 1991 Mazda Miata and use it for your needs with limited concerns.

How sophisticated are you mechanically? Knowing when something is about to break and how long it works helps a lot.

Do you have a relative that can work on it? Do you know a really good, reasonable mechanic?

Concerning the 3-4 long trips to Dallas, you can always rent a car for limited costs. I wouldn't lose sleep over that concern.

If you want to save money, I would just get a 90's model car like a Miata and go that route. Another option is a cheaper used motor cycle.
