Mallett wasn't even that good against Cleveland. The fact that we rushed the ball 50 times for 200 yards made the offense look good. Mallett was decent, but Fitz has had better games than that this year.
67% completion percentage, 20-30, 7 yards/attempt, 2 TDs and 1 INT. And I think everyone agreed from the good old "eye test" that he appeared to have much better command of the offense than Fitzpatrick while making quicker decisions and showing arm strength. He also didn't hold on to the ball too long repeatedly nor have as many close-call turnovers like Fitz.
That's true, Fitz was better against Indy and Pittsburgh than Mallett was against Cleveland, but Mallett's strong arm and his quick release style makes people view his success differently than Fitz's success.
Yeah, Pittsburgh, where he threw an INT inside our own 20 right before the half. Pitt capitalized and scored a TD. And Indy, where he fumbled on the last Texans drive down by 5. He also got sacked 5 times because he wouldn't get rid of the ball. Both losses. Gee, I wonder why those games aren't viewed as great performances.
Because some people judge individual performance based on the outcome of the team game. I get that. I judge individual performance on individual performance though, which team won is irrelevant to that conversation. Give the Texans 200 yards on the ground in either of those games and they win. Have the Texans defense hold either of those teams to 7 points and they win....of course that wouldn't fit the narrative. I get giving Mallett style points, but his actual performance wasn't off the charts like some are trying to say. He had a good game where he handed the ball off 50 times.
Mallett played well... Not saying he didn't. But, that game was completely dominated by the Texans, both on the ground and on defense. Malletts role was reduced to the point where any qb could have brought home the W for the Texans. It was a good game and I liked his quick throws, but Fitz has had better games this season.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think Mallet is great or anything. But it was a solid performance and I liked his decision making much better than Fitz's. I don't know that Fitz hasn't had better games, but the 2 that were pointed out were not.
I very clearly did not make my case solely outcome based. Turnovers and decision making matter even in games where Fitz puts up high y/a. The tipped pass bad luck narrative won't fly here. The 50 hand-off narrative is funny. He also threw the ball 30 times and they weren't mostly short passes like Fitz's.
He threw the ball 30 times and only got 211 yards out of it which is less than either Fitz game I pointed out. You can blame Fitz for that late game fumble, or you can see that it was caused by an O lineman who didn't block his guy....or you can see that it wouldn't have even happened if Andre didn't fumble the ball in the red zone on the previous possession. Either way, if you are just judging QB performance, there's no way anyone could say that Mallett's game against the Browns was the best of the season for the Texans and that was the point. Fitz has played better than that, he's also played much worse than that....yet never as bad as Mallett's second game where he was injured.
Only 211? He got 7 y/a. That is not bad. Fitz's career y/a is 6.6 after all. Brady is at 7.18 this year. On the Fitz fumble, he had plenty of time, stepped up in the pocket, pump faked, then decided to scramble. That's where the fumble happened. The narrative of blaming everyone on the team except Fitz makes no sense to me.
