Just in: Interstellar pulled from theaters as Nolan is rewriting the script in order for it to be scientifically accurate.

Wow this one actually kind of freaked me out, & meanwhile b-bob already suspected it all along!

But yeah maybe I'd prefer all gifs over some of the pseudo intellectuals who would have otherwise chimed in with regurgitated concepts/terminology they don't really grasp. One of those reaction gif girls looks like a combination of taylor swift & toni collette-

Do supermassive black holes tend to rotate in alignment with the rotational axis of the galaxy they are in? It seems like they should, following the same mechanism that causes planets to rotate around a star in alignment with the rotation of that star.

If so, shouldn't the appropriate question be, "Why do galaxies tend to rotate in alignment?"

It has to be emphasized that we don't really have any black hole data. We have some spots where we strongly suspect there are black holes, but it's not like we can definitively say there are X number of confirmed black holes and here's how they spin. I think the title is kind of misleading there (or to the best of my understanding.)

Also, this might be fun, visual context:

There is also the strange alignment of submissive black holes.

I was under the impression that a "quasar" is pretty much what you see when on of the accretion disk jets from one of the poles of the black hole seen pointing straight at earth.

    Is that not true?

Well, yes, it's all "it's thought that (maybe) ..."

    Here's a nice Q&A (or I think it's nice)...

    http://www.phys.vt.edu/~jhs/faq/quasars.html#q2

This confirms what you're saying, but it's still hypothetical. I think a lot of very good astrophysicists are really worried that black holes are just assumed to exist because they've had so much currency. As far as I understand, we haven't confirmed that one exists, and they are based on a pretty extreme mathematical result. Cheers.

I was kind of interested to see what people actually had to say about this as I didn't really understand it meant and thought it was interesting, but then saw the endless GIFS. I actually laughed and thought it was pretty funny, but it can be kind of annoying when Clutchfans or anywhere really, go in the Circlejerk > actual content route.

    Shouldn't it be expanding?

Hm... By definition, they inherently exist as the absence of that which can be seen, right? Can you ever really "see a black hole"?

For the concerned, what evidence would be sufficient to indicate confirmation?

their presence is inferred by detecting x-rays and electromagnetic radiation

Right, but B-Bob is saying that isn't enough for some people. That is not really "direct" evidence. Just evidence of what is going on around the spot where the supposed black hole exists. Presumably there could be some other super massive thing there I guess? The x rays and electromagnetic radiation are really "proof" of the accretion disk.
