Gym rant thread? Gym rant thread. I use the gym in my office building that's shared between all of the companies that work there. It's not the best, but it's small and relatively private. Plus, it's easy to get to know the regulars. One guy, who doesn't work for the same company as me, has started coming in more frequently. He takes forever to finish his sets (will often sit on a machine using his phone in between reps) and tries to claim multiple pieces of equipment at once. Standard stuff, I know. He goes slow enough to know he ain't circuit training (although texxx is right about working in. If it's crowded, let somebody else hop on while you catch your breath in between sets). Here's where it gets weird; he doesn't wear shoes. He works out barefoot. To make matters worse, he totally disregards the signs all over the gym that say "Please wipe down equipment after use" and puts his bare feet on the bench and mats. I confronted him about his feet, and not wiping down equipment, as he was starting to leave one night. "I don't sweat," he replied, covered in sweat. "Dude, really? You're sweating right now," I said. "Do you have a problem with it?" he asked. "Yeah, I do. It's gross that you won't wipe down machines after you've used them and there are free wipes in the gym," I said. "It's also gross and unsafe that you don't wear shoes in the gym." "I try to be safe," he muttered. "It's not about that," I said. "That's how stuff like athlete's foot and staph spreads." "I don't have athlete's foot," he said. "Again, that's not the point," I responded. "It's unsanitary for a shared space." "Well, if there's athlete's foot, won't I be the first one to get it?" he asked as he started to walk outside. "OK, dude. I'm just going to report you the next time you come back." I said as he left the gym. As he left, another dude in the gym noted the the shoeless guy also wore the same workout clothes every day, so he was only adding more sweat to the equipment he used. He hasn't come back since.
Yeah, it is. If OP is working out alone and someone asks to share, OP should let the new guy use the equipment while OP rests between sets.
I do understand, but I guess that's the difference in gym etiquette. I OFFER to let people work in when I see them standing around and waiting, even if it's an inconvenience to myself to have to take weights on/off.
no, not really. by the time they take off my weights & all of that.. I'd be ready to start my next set.
why would someone "stand around & wait" for a piece of equipment? isn't that rude? can't they do something else while waiting for you to finish up?
Your office building has a gym in the building? And there's other companies in the building? And ya'll can share gyms? DaFuq So did the barefoot weirdo quit his job or what?
Harsh truth right here. I cancelled my public gym membership, and now strictly use my home gym or office gym along with cycling to stay in shape. I used to be the one who'd wipe the equipment, do my sets quickly for others to use, put the weights back on the correct rack, etc. It became tiring to see the lack of reciprocation. With a home gym and office gym, you save a lot of time with no commute and cleaner/better maintained equipment.
Office gyms have become quite popular around the world actually. At work, it's also not uncommon to see more standing/walking desks. People around me in general value exercise more versus 20 years ago.
If they go "do something else", then they run the risk of losing the equipment to somebody else who won't share. It's better to stand around and wait.
You did good. I would let him and right after the first 3 push, i'd ask the same question. if he ignores you, fart.
