LOL, If Mallet keeps getting rid of the ball in 2.06 seconds, then the Texans won't need a backup.

Depends on where those passes go. Getting rid of it in 2.06 seconds is amazing so long as it's not to the other team or into the ground. He showed promise his first game, but he's a LONG way from where we need to be thinking about paying him.

Mallett had a solid first game. The All-22 shows that he did miss a good handful of reads that could have resulted in either more points or more first downs...but, all in all, he made solid, quick decisions and delivered the ball in a timely manner.

Excited to see what he brings to the table against Cincy.

To expect him to be worth $20 million is even sillier... if some other team wants to pay him that, they'd be idiots.

And as I see him purely the product of the system, he likely flails elsewhere, gets cut, and ends up with simply the signing bonus (and not much else).... so yes, he would potentially benefit more by re-signing here (in that he's more likely to get more of the total contract he signs).

    1 game guys. 1 game.

what is the point in debating a contract off 1 game.

only one really bad throw...that shouldve been picked...overall we all should be excited with his command/poise in the pocket...Granted that the Oline did a great job, I think he set protections correctly allowing him a more clean pocket. Im actually really excited about the cincy game...this time with cautious optimism. We are all looking to see if we really have something here under center.

When you have to jettison core players or fail to resign players because of this "1 year" tryout, there are repercussions. Those teams I mentioned above were all hamstrung because they took QBs that ultimately failed. Also, if Mallett does so-so in his franchise year, you're faced with the same dilemma anyways... if he rocks it, you've essentially priced yourself out of his range as he will then be looking for more than what the franchise tag gave him.

If he plays well, then I don't see that as being laughable.

Great QB's win you big games. Chances are, Mallet isn't that. But in case he is, you don't want to lose him. And this is based off the assumption he gets the Texans in to the playoffs this year!

Secondary, o-line, ILB, WR and DT are all needs in addition to QB. You cut Foster and Andre to make room, and fail to sign Jackson, and those needs add up.

Its worse because he's more unproven than those other two guys were... and they ultimately didn't live up to their contracts despite showing more success. I don't expect Mallett to play up to the 1 year franchise money deal... if he's looking for that sort of money, and if he gets it elsewhere, let him go.

A signing bonus greater than Fitz/Orton, but less than more proven QB's like Dalton... nothing more than a 3 year deal with incentives (by that point, either Mallett's the man, Savage or draft pick is poised to take over, or they're both flopping and a new regime is about to come in).

If it takes anywhere close to a 1 year $20 million dollar to keep him, you look elsewhere. I'm of the educated opinion that it will not take that much to either retain him or to find a QB just as likely of having the mythical future success that Mallett is projected to have.

Mallett is still a long shot... even with a good remaining 7 games. If he goes on to be one of the all-time greats, it will be yet another "exception to the rule" that everybody here likes to spout off about, and how we shouldn't be "counting" on these guys for anything, and that if they "succeed" it's "all luck"... etc. etc. etc.

*IF* Mallett proves himself over the next 6 games, I think the Texans and Mallett will come to a palatable agreement.

i think something along the lines of a 2 year deal with incentives. if he's the real deal, Hou can pay him like it afterwards.

Its one game, I have been insisting on Mallett getting the starting position but even I know Its One Game! I hope he pans out but all of this is premature. Man he went from "sucking" to "we better lock him up before someone else steals him away", Cmon.

It's one game, but the fact that we are fairly local to his hometown, have a coach and system he knows, have a owner that players seem to like, and gave him his chance would all potentially bode well for us.

The Texans could win the rest of their games and still miss the playoffs. Having Fitzpatrick at quarterback has put them in a position where they need help from other teams to get in. His performance the rest of the way is probably all that matters.

what if he leads us to a superbowl? we won't be able to win back to back superbowls since we're going to have to pay his selfish arse! brady got his first big deal in 2002, and that was something around 5 yrs 35 million.

good to see the fanbase excited once again*
