Astronomy is always amazing. The thing that mainly gets me is light years. When you turn on your headlights at night, you can instantly see everything no matter the distance. Then, you consider the distance the same light would travel for an entire minute, then an hour. Then an entire year!! Unfathomable. Scientists know about objects that are millions and billions of light years away!! Incredible.

It takes the sun's light 8.33 minutes to hit Earth.

It would take a plane 19 years to reach the sun.

Yeah, that does seem false. One hand full of sand probably equals a quarter million.

At this point, I would put serious cash on the extinction of mankind before people ever leave the solar system in any meaningful way.

At least, I would if there were any conceivable way to collect.

Here is a great read on the Fermi Paradox:

The great filter theory is absolutely fascinating to read about and its quite scary considering that whichever theory you accept affects how badly you want to discover other alien species or even basic lifeforms.

Thanks for the good read, I'm sitting back in the recliner drinking a beer trying to digest all of this. If we all got together and smoked a joint we would have this figured out in 30 minutes lol.

yes, it is a joke to rustle up some jimmies, or detect some people who have some analysis/math challenges.

You can read an analysis of Sagan's statement here: http://www.numericana.com/answer/sagan.htm

    Actually it's more like 100,000...

Between this thread and watching Interstellar, I'm inspired to go back and watch "How the Universe Works" and to finish reading Simon Singh's Big Bang:

I highly recommend this book: it's a chronicle of the history of science.
If you caught the first parts of the Neil deGrasse Tyson version of Cosmos, this book starts off similar but has much more depth in it. It comprises of very mini biographies of some very important contributors to scientific advances.

Fun read! Never heard of the Type I-III concept. So many interesting explanations.

I'm a member of Explanation Group 1, with the Great Filter being going from non-life to life. I think it's much smaller than the 1% thrown out as an estimate in the article.

Great stuff and very inspiring. If we could only put half the energy and resources we put into war into getting us off the planet, who knows how far we'd go.
