Hard not to feel bad when you read that headline... just in may he said, "My time is coming, I'm only 21 years old." He was well on his way to becoming one of the next stars of the show and he will be missed not only by Cardinals fans but by all baseball fans because we missed out on something great! RIP
man, as a cardinals fan, this is tough... he was a huge talent and from everything I've seen about him, he was an extremely hard worker. This sadly brings back a lot of memories to when Darryl Kile died a while back as well... RIP Oscar you'll be greatly missed
Just another step in the right direction. I do feel bad for Rick Renteria, he did a great job this season with these young guys. But, the move had to be made since it was available.
Go get that cash! <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/marlins?src=hash">#marlins</a>, stanton closing in on $325M, 13-year deal. expected to have no-trade and opt-out. story up soon on <a href="https://twitter.com/CBSSportsMLB">@CBSSportsMLB</a></p>— Jon Heyman (@JonHeymanCBS) <a href="https://twitter.com/JonHeymanCBS/status/533358660547006464">November 14, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
There's a no-trade clause, so it won't be the Marlins trading him early (as they have already proven to do). There's also going to be an opt-out clause for him after 5 years, which basically gives him a chance to get an even bigger deal to match the escalating salaries. The Marlins have a lot of young MLB-ready talent... wouldn't be surprised if they are in contention next year.
13 years?!?! Jesus Christ! All these teams are gonna regret a contract longer than 7 years. That Cano contract is gonna be a b**** for the Mariners.
Depends where salaries go from here. $25MM/yr may be a bargain in 10 years. If the Astros had signed Biggio or Bagwell to 13 year deals back around 1995 at the going market rate, they wouldn't have regretted it. Cano's is trickier because it takes him to age 40 and 2nd basemen don't age well. But Stanton's would end at 37, I believe, and he could be put at 1B later in his career. If they get 8-9 good years out of it, it probably pays off. If he opts out after 5, even better - they got him during his prime and don't have to pay him in the later years.

Wow Living near Atlanta, I've become kind of a sidewalk Braves fan alongside the Astros. This is a disgustingly awful trade.
For who? Miller is younger, has been better so far, and has many more years of club control. Heyward is a free agent next year, and it's still unclear exactly how good he is. He's been a huge disappointment offensively, but brilliant defensively. They may have discussed an extension and been far, far apart. If that's the case, getting Miller is a pretty nice return.
Miller has not been close to better so far. Heyward's bWAR is 24.5 in just 5 seasons despite missing several games due to injury. Miller is only a year younger (Heyward is 25, Miller is 24), so it isn't as big a disparity in age as it feels. Heyward is criminally underrated in large part due to expectations. People thought he could be what Mike Trout is, but it hasn't worked out. Instead he is just an above average offensive player who is a tremendous defensive player. Meanwhile, Miller struggled last season. Posting a 4.54 FIP, and a 6.25 K/9. He did have his share of decent numbers, but he looked more like a 4/5 starter than the 2/3 guy he was as a rookie. Cardinals easily got the better player. Braves did good to get a young MLB pitcher with a proven track record of success, who still maintains a high ceiling. Very obvious Braves were not going to get an extension done with Heyward and decided to make the move.
