He is getting paid to sit out (and paid a lot at that). If it was non guaranteed contracts and he doesn't get paid while hurt, no one would care if he sits out. Instead he is protecting himself first, while still getting paid by the team.

he is protecting himself while also protecting the asset of the bulls he was also getting paid to rehab for the past 2 seasons, I think the Bulls would rather pay Rose to sit out a few regular season games to avoid paying him to sit on the surgery table and then in a suit for the rest of the season
