Canaan as starter 32.4 min 13.8 pts with True Shooting 59.0% 3.0 reb 2.5 ast 2.5 to That's getting it done for a backup point guard.
A sweet 3 point shooting stroke and willingness to attack the rim for a backup PG? No complaints. A Bobby Jackson type of player.
Canaan got game. I need to see some consistency and for him to string together a good stretch of games. Of course that is not possible until i can 'see' the rockets. Soon root, soon. F*$! CSN for life.
Don't expect Canaan to be heavily featured in the rotation once Bev is back. Does Canaan have promise? Certainly. Is he close to the defender Bev is? Of course not. Defense is what matters right now from the PG position. The Rockets score more than enough points. They had 87 in Saturday's game, with three starters out. The Rockets point guard needs to hit a very good percentage from beyond the arc and play great defense. That is it since Harden is running as the true PG. Patience Canaan fans.
i disagree, he is close, though not on beverly's level. you act like they're world's apart. he's an above average defender.
I agree on the defenive assessment, that is a non-conversation. I do like what I see in his PG skills. Just a bb dream right now as i see visions of him managing a well oiled machine and directing traffic. I don't think that is a long shot and unfortunately i do not see Bev being able to do that part. Of course, this then takes a turn into a conversation about what this team really needs, just a defensive PG or a true PG. While history is not always the definitive boundary of the future, most Championship squads have had a 'floor general' type of PG rather than just a defensive role player. Payton was a defensive juggernaut (i realize the sonics were not a champ team - only because of MJ), but of course he was one of the best PGs in NBA history and an anomaly that i don't think we need Bev to be. So in the long run, i think Canaan has more potential to be a floor general and thus more effective for a championship team and Bev as a role player on that team that comes in to play lock down d as required on the opposing PG or smallSG.
6th man role is perfect for this guy. Bev needs to start so we can set the defensive tone from tipoff. They can still both be getting 30+ mpg and terry/daniels can be in the 15-20mpg range.
Canaan & Terry have been very effective together. IMO both will continue to see a lot of time once Bev is healthy. The Rockets will likely even use a lot of small ball line-ups with Bev & Canaan on the floor at the same time. Harden Beverly Canaan Terry Could turn into one of the very best guard rotations in the league
Getting shook on a play by one of the best ball handlers in the league makes you a bad defender? Tell me more.
A very good take. But the current Rockets team is constructed around Harden as the PG. Who in the league would you rather see with the rock than Harden? An analysis of why Harden is the primary PG on the Rockets team is fairly straight forward. The Rockets R&R offense depends heavily on spacing and Harden's unique dribble drive. Harden is best in the league at penetrating deeply into a collapsing defense and getting a shot off at the rim or making an assist to a spot up shooter beyond the arc. Harden assists are averaging a great 12.2 points per game for his team mates. The Rockets offense is predicated this season on Harden being the only pound the rock player on the floor. If you are playing with Harden and the ball is in your hands your job is to either get the ball to the basket or pass. This makes for a beautiful SA type basketball. etc.
The fact is, if Canaan is truly a good player, we wouldn't need a thread with a title saying he's a good player
Rox need Canaan on the floor for the ten to fifteen minutes a game that Harden sits for offensive reasons. Canaan is the clear second best playmaker on this team. It's not really about having more offense. It's about playing the players that have the most positive effect on the game. He is most definitely top 7 on this team in that category.
He is a bit like Mike James in my opinion. Scoring point guard, good quickness, not the best assist men.
