Agreed. I mean we're all used to it so it seems normal, but when you really think about it, it's pretty weird.
Agreed. Or adding painful vocal flourishes: "o'er the la-and of the free-ee-ee-ah-oh-ao-uh-ee-hee! And the home . . . of the . . . bray hay hay hay hay hay- eeve!"
I might have cared what Bum thought about a topic, but I think Wade needs to make his way back into the water.
The Orioles' fan don't wait, they start at the 'Oh' say can you... BTW - - just why do we sing the national anthem at all sporting events? And we Americans are not unique with it, either???
If you go to a Raptors game they play the Canadian anthem while everybody chuckles because it's the Canadian national anthem.
Yes. It was more than laughing -- like he was giggling and talking to himself or something? I'm not sure what that was about, but I did think it was sort of inappropriate. And I'm not usually sensitive to these kinds of things at all, for what that's worth.
Dwight and Cisco have some sort of thing they say/do around the same time the crowd yells "Rockets". Not sure what it is, but they've done it pretty much every home game since Dwight has been here.
The concept of the national anthem bothers me. Being coerced into singing it or even standing up during it offends me.
I'm more bothered by the fact that a war anthem is sung before every sporting event than I am with the personal liberties some fanbases (as detailed in this thread) take with the lyrics.
Its Baseballs fault. They started doing it during WWI for patriotism then again during WWII. After that it spread to other sports.
I don't know its history. But I would imagine that in the old days, sporting events weren't viewed as "entertainment" in the same vein as movies and concerts. It was supposed to have some kind of dignity in sports. Hence the word "sportsmanship." Anyway, I agree with everyone that the anthem has lost its meaning long time ago in ball games. And the OP has been asking if there might be something else Phillips was referring to. Seems like nobody has an answer to that.
Except that is apparently not what Phillips was upset with. It was the behavior of unnamed Rockets' players during the playing of the anthem.
If he's referring to the fans cheering during "Rockets red glare", of course Rockets fans are going to cheer. Fans from other teams cheer all the time when "That our flag was still there" is played as well. Is that a crime? If it's about Howard, I really don't mind him and Garcia doing their own thing when "Rockets red glare" is played.
Some people just take offense to so many different things. Worry about yourself. If you think something is disrespectful to do during the National Anthem, then make sure you don't do it and it ends there. I don't even care what Mahmoud Adbul-Rauf did during the National Anthem, and it was crazy the ****-storm that created. I remember a guy at my work taking offense to the fact that my church has a lot of people that wear casual clothes to church. To him the only acceptable thing was a suit and tie. Not sure why these people get personally offended by other peoples actions. Just worry about yourself and life will be much easier.
I'm offended we have National Anthem at local sporting events. I'd much rather have a League or Team Anthem.
