Theo van Gogh lived in the Netherlands. The guard in front of the Canadian parliament that was murdered by an Islamist last week lived in Canada. So did the two Canadian police officers who were murdered by Islamists the week before.
I thought fundamentalism's rise mirrored secularism and sexuality's rise in the West, just inexperienced but passionate young people employing emotion and values to rebel against administrative corruption and appealing to marginalized groups. Somehow getting oil money out of partisan, tribal or hereditary networks and fully optimizing the assets down the supply chain would possibly minimize government corruption and fully employ and empower the populus. Just have them privatize the oil industry with partitioned and fully domestic ownership, and start buying the refined products from them.
I'd kinda like a list, and I'm being serious, of the best sandwiches from all of the predominantly Muslim countries.
That doesn't matter to ATW - what matters is that he was a Muslim, and that Muslims worship violence.
Excellent suggestion. I'd add the "Rise of Oh-Dearism" to that. I used Netflix DVD to find his stuff, but enlightened souls have posted much of his work on YouTube.
Make no mistake, Affleck is using this to get attention as well. Ben's take during the discussion was that if you don't agree with his position you should shut up, so in that sense she is correct. I do agree it opened more discussion but I'm not sure how productive those discussions are... much like this and almost all "discussions" in the poo flinging monkey section.
Well, this about the only criticism I have of your credibility, Mathloom, but then, I'm probably within a very small minority that actually reads your posts in entirety before responding.
Don't you think that's what drew him to islam? When all the crazies who act out are going in one direction.......
You might want to check your perspective. Look at all the violent crimes committed by the mentally ill, and then check how many of those crimes were done in the name of Islam. It's far from all the crazies who act out going in one direction.
All those mass shootings in the US are due to crazies from what I was told. So if all these people are going in one direction, they are all secret Islamist terrorists? Didn't know that, thanks for sharing. You are a bright one.
There is a clear issue with entitled/disillusioned youth and gun control- those are what lead to school related shootings. It is widely accepted and when the libs finally learn how to get things done... steps will be taken. Another thing that creates entitlement/disillusionment are islamic scholars brainwashing the poor. when the moderates don't speak out, these scholars run wild and take down the religion with them. all these people are willing to die because they have nothing to lose. the moderates meanwhile have assimilated to the west and our comfortable way of life.. so they don't care. what they don't get though, is that whether they like it or not, they've been dragged into all of this. they have to take a stand and show some spine instead of turning the other way and dismissing it. otherwise the world will turn against them.
You seem to be unaware of the massive amount of moderate Muslims who have spoken out a great deal against the fanatic Islamic terrorists, and who, in fact, fight them and give their lives in the battle against the radical Islamic terrorists. I really don't understand where most of your posts are coming from.
Is it because they are fighting for moderation of Islam, or is it a power struggle between different factions of Muslims? It is true, as you say, that other Muslims die fighting against ISIS, but is that because they want to defend the faith against extremist tendencies, or is it simply a power struggle or because the battle was forced upon them? Why do you automatically assume that they are "moderates"? How do you define "moderate"? Anything that is not just as extreme as ISIS? Have they clearly defined why they are "moderate"? I am not trying to diminish the sacrifice and the suffering that Muslims have gone through at the hands of (even) more extremist Muslims - I am just wondering how you define "moderate". Often, it just seems to be Sunnis vs. Shiites, but neither of them would qualify as "moderate" in my book - they both want death for apostates, stoning of adulterers, death for gays, etc.
In large part it is because the Muslims being killed by ISIS are more moderate than ISIS. Part of it is also different groups
The greatest commentary on Islam (and one of the best on reconciling faith with reason in general) I ever read was in grad school by this guy, which I recommend.
Avicenna certainly an extremely impressive guy - who happened to be born into circumstances where he grew up as a Muslim. That does not give Islam any more or less credibility, in my opinion.
