NBA, BBVA launch $30M-a-year deal with cool Kevin Durant-James Harden ad

James Harden admitted a fear of heights, but when he reached the top of the BBVA headquarters in Madrid to shoot a commercial, those fears dissolved.

"The view took away all the nervousness and I went up there and I did what I had to do," Harden said. "A basketball court on top of a building overlooking the beautiful city of Madrid is pretty dope."

The new BBVA spot features Harden blindfolded and wearing an earpiece on the fenced-in rooftop court going against three defenders while Kevin Durant, from a command center in Oklahoma City, tells Harden how to beat the defenders off the dribble.

The commercial officially kicks off the new extension of the partnership between the NBA and BBVA, one of Spain's largest banks. It is a deal that will pay the NBA more than $30 million a year, a person familiar with the deal told USA TODAY Sports. The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the financial terms.

BBVA also owns BBVA Compass, a U.S.-based bank with branches in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico and Texas.

"It was important for us to work together in an important strategic market internationally but also it helped them build the BBVA Compass brand here in the U.S.," NBA executive vice president of global marketing partnerships Emilio Collins said.

"We're an incredibly global organization as is BBVA. So it's important for us to have a partner that has the right global reach. … Our fans are extremely tech savvy and always looking to engage with us through digital and social mediums. That's an important area of focus for BBVA."

The video was shot while Harden was in Spain playing for Team USA at the FIBA World Cup, and had Durant decided to play, he would've been on the rooftop court of BBVA's 350-feet headquarters. Commercial creators improvised and had Durant "communicate" with Harden from Oklahoma City.

"I like the way it came out," Durant said. "It's a different style, and it should be well-received. It was fun to do with James."
