Watt would be wasted talent if Crennel used him as a 2 gap 3-4 DE, but he recognized Watt's skill set and adjusted his defense around it.

I'm sure the Texans didn't go the cheap route in regards to his health... Well, I think I'm sure.

During the off-season they were saying the defense will run a lot of 4 down sets. Don't know if that will take Romeo out of his element though... Probably should have went after a 4-3 DC since they knew they were drafting Clowney. But it's not like he's not athletic enough to drop back in coverage if he has to.

They said the same thing about Mario. He looked fine in a 3-4. It's not a rigid system. Elite rushers will rush the passer almost every time. Also, most teams aren't even in their base defense during the games that much.

Mario was a NFL Pro Bowl player with 5 years of experience.

A meniscus repair contributes to the restoration of the normal anatomy of the knee and a successful intervention leads to a good long-term prognosis for patients. The intervention is all the more promising the closer the tear is to the meniscus attachment, thus in an area, which is supplied with blood.

It doesn't matter. Elite rushers will rush the passer almost every time as I've said no matter what system they are in unless the coach is an idiot. Most defenses are in nickel and dime most of the time anyways with four down linemen. Tamba Hali is another example of a guy who people panicked about when he switched to OLB but he's never been asked to drop in coverage much at all. It doesn't even mean that he can't. He's just mostly used to do what he does best. He had 14.5 sacks under Crennel in 2010 after switching to OLB in '09.

Today Clowney said he couldn't move laterally. Unless it's a smokescreen, he won't and shouldn't play Monday. Probably not the following week either.

The surgeon will perform a partial or total meniscal resection depending on the size and position of the tear. A partial meniscal resection is performed in approx. 85% of all meniscus interventions. As the name says, only damaged segments of the meniscus are removed during a partial meniscal resection. Depending on the situation this may mean a minor cutting of the meniscus edges or a resection of a larger portion of the meniscus. In any case, the surgeon attempts to maintain as much of the healthy meniscus tissue as possible. This is important for two reasons: On the one hand, to keep the risk of premature wear and tear of the joint due to missing meniscus tissue as low as possible and on the other hand to maintain the possibility to use a meniscus implant.

    http://www.drdavidgeier.com/partial-meniscectomy-meniscus-tear-knee-surgery-questions/

Does removing part of the meniscus lead to long-term problems later in life?

The meniscus acts as a shock absorber, so in theory, removing part of it would lead to more stress on the articular cartilage and bones. While there is no way to predict if patient will develop later arthritis or how quickly, it is a potential concern.

Despite this concern for long-term wear on the articular cartilage and subsequent arthritis, the inner torn fragment probably provides little protection to this cartilage either. Plus the pain is unlikely to improve without trimming that part out. Therefore patients often undergo surgery to relieve pain and get back to activities even if they could develop degenerative problems in later years or decades.

Why does it seem to take so long to recover from the surgery?

Despite the perception that the surgeon trims out the inner part of the tear and thus the source of the pain, the patient is not instantly better. It’s true that the majority of the pain disappears fairly quickly. But it takes time for the swelling of the knee to go down. It also takes time to regain full motion and strength. The surgeon typically allows the patient to resume activities fairly quickly. After all, the patient is unlikely to do more damage to the meniscus by walking on it and starting exercise programs. Unfortunately it can take several weeks or even months to actually be able to resume exercise, especially repetitive impact, and return to the pre-injury level. Overall it can take 4-5 months before the patient is as good as he or she will be after a partial meniscectomy.

So whats your point? The removal procedure, partial or whole, has a higher chance of bone on bone friction leading to arthritic conditions. He should have had it repaired is what I'm saying.

I was just pointing out Wade runs a different system that's more like a 4-3. And you do know there are defensive ends that teams tried to convert to OLB that didn't work out right...???

I'm not saying it won't work _ I'm saying if you have a guy like J.J. and you add a guy like Clowney (who's college coach said he should play with his hand in the dirt and not standing up), run a 4-3 defense.

Well, who is treating him like a baby? Sounds a bit contradictory...

Either way, we're 3-3 and the defense isn't the real concern. It's the offense. He's also just practiced today for the first time. It doesn't make any sense to put him out there after only 3 days of practice. Even if he's physically healed, mentally, it's going to take more than 3 days to get every thing right and that has nothing to do with being mentally weak. Anyone who's had to protect their joint for weeks like that will tell you it took them more than a few days to feel comfortable cutting and planting.

I'd let him practice for 3-4 days and see if he has any issues. Then test him early in the week and then harder later in the week. Let him play next week, if that works out.

I clicked submit on accident before I could get everything I wanted copied and pasted. Eighty-five percent of all meniscus interventions are partial resections according to one of the sites I used. Doesn't seem like everyone can just choose to have it repaired.

There are often meniscus injuries which cannot be repaired with a suture since they are in an area of the meniscus which is supplied with little blood or the meniscus tissue is overly tattered.

I know what Wade runs. And I know what Crennel runs. Both of them use their elite pash rushers to rush the passer as much as possible. And yes, I do know that there are defensive ends that teams have tried to convert to OLB that didn't work out (Jason Babin being one). Clowney isn't Jason Babin. Neither is Mario. And neither is Hali. Guys who are elite pass rushers are never asked to play the traditional 3-4 OLB role because qb pressure is the name of the game. They are asked to rush, rush, and rush again.
And why does it even matter about switching to a 4-3? These guys have their hands in the dirt seventy percent of the time anyway. What a team's base defense is just doesn't matter anymore.

Our defense kind of sucks. Almost all of its success is due to turnovers. You may say "but turnovers count" and they do, but it's not the most sustainable thing. Your defense can't be predicated solely on that because it's going to break down at some point. Aside from the turnovers, this defense sucks. They need those turnovers to survive. And if they don't get them, they're really, really bad. You could argue that it's not as much of a concern as the offense (and I think that's very debatable), but it's still definitely a concern.

Why...??? Because the 3-4 defense is Romeo's bread and butter. If a defense is going to run with 4 down 70% of the time _ than go with a guy who's made his bones as a 4-3 DC. Yes they are both defensive coordinators but if you need heart surgery you don't go to a proctologist.

And in today's passing NFL... You probably need two very good ILB to have a dominant 3-4 defense and I'm not sure we even have one.

I love how the resident MD's/medical experts on this board give such great advice in regards to Clowney's prognosis...whether or not he shouldve had meniscus repair vs excision, etc etc etc.

The extent of Clowney's injury was never revealed to the public, how much tissue was excised, how he has responded to treatments, and what his long term prognosis is. The time frame the Texans used was 4-6 weeks. The Steelers game is going to be 6 weeks. If he is ready to contribute, he will play(definitely not the full load of snaps) most likely in situational rushing downs. If they want to be cautious, they will. One thing I have gotten from BOB staff is this...they will let us know how much we need to know and everything else is speculation. They also make sure that all of their players know what to say to the media, and how much to say. Clowney's interview today is eerily similar to an interview with Arian Foster earlier this season. According to the Texans pressors today, Clowney practiced...but he is still a game time decision.

the following is a clip from the Texans website:

Almost every team goes nickel and dime most of the time in the modern NFL. A decent chunk of those teams have 3-4 coordinators. Ask them why they don't just hire a 4-3 guy. Not me. They apparently don't think base defenses are that important. 3-4 nose tackles aren't taken in the first round unless they are freaks who can play in four down situations.

Also, Crennel's got tons of experience and can groom and mentor Vrabel. That's the main reason he was hired. And I don't disagree about the ILB statement. But they don't have the linebackers for a 4-3 lb group either.

I only remember Braddock from guest spots on Gwin's show when he was still with 790 (It was a crappy time for late morning sports radio). I think he may have been a former scout, but he was just as unbearable as gwin. It was a jerk-store circle-jerk.
