Rookie QB's rarely play well, and I like what I've seen from Bortles so far. He looks through his progressions and he continues to go deep without immediately looking to check down. He has a lot of picks, but completes 67.8 % of his passes with a 76.8 rating which is good for a rookie. Peyton only had a 71.2 rating his first season.

I think the argument would be that he was/is mostly interested in the money and doesn't really love playing football. So as long as he has the money, why push? Not saying it's true, but that fits the narrative established from his SC days.

That very well could be true - but stories with unnamed sources often prove to be right, and apparently this reporter has broken correct news in the past, so it's not just some random twitter dude. Unfortunately, Clowney playing or not playing Monday doesn't really show anything. Him playing could mean that coaches "won" the fight with Clowney, or it could mean there was never really a conflict in the first place.

First impressions are difficult things to break. This is a narrative that won't die down until / unless Clowney somehow kills it over an extended period of time. It's the flipside of the narrative about Watt, for example, who is known for his work-ethic, etc. If Watt says he can't play a game, everyone will trust his judgment and no one would question it because it's just a given that he'd never miss a game unless he was forced to.

I dunno about that, for me Teddy will have to look competent against at least a halfway decent defense before I'd say he looks better than the other rookie QB's. So far, he looks pretty much the same as the rest of them, and it's not good.

Yup... Just like the time we're spending waiting on Clowney. Hopefully it will be worth it for years to come.

But you and everyone else is right... Blake sucks and Warren Moon and the many other experts who said Blake would be the best quarterback out of this draft a year from now don't know 5h1t... My bad.

    http://profootballzone.com/nfl/49ers-chargers-texans-also-coveted-bruce-irvin/

According to Dan Pompei of the National Football Post, the Seattle Seahawks weren’t the only team that really liked former West Virginia linebacker Bruce Irvin. Both the San Diego Chargers and Houston Texans coveted Irvin and the San Francisco 49ers supposedly liked him so much they were willing to trade up for him.

Even though the Seahawks were criticized for taking Irvin in the middle of the first round, if they didn’t they he may have been taken later in the first or early in the second round by another team.

Surprise! Bruce Irvin in the first round? You might be thinking about e-mailing Woody Paige to tell him that he's right about me being a buffoon, but let me explain first. Michael Lombardi reported that some team flew Irvin to their facility in a helicopter and told him he'd be their first-round pick. I have some reason to believe that the Texans will pick Irvin here based on some other things I've heard today, so I guess I'm taking the bait.

What I do know for certain, per trusted sources, is that this pick will not be used on a receiver. It'll be the top rush linebacker or right tackle available on Houston's board.

Kool... Maybe they will draft Winston if they get a chance to.

O'Brien makes it sound like he is ready to go.

The fact that Clowney made a direct example, like "If I can't cut the way I want" is telling me that he probably was having those issues.

Lets hope that Clowney drinks some water from Bobby Boucher this weekend.

He should have just had it repaired and called it a season. Ain't like he would have been the difference in us making the playoffs or not. Now he has to deal with the chance of getting arthritic in that knee.

Can you imagine the firestorm around here if he did that? I can just see half the people here vowing to never watch another Texans game again (like they do every year) because the Texans screwed up the draft.

Let's not set our hopes too high. The last full game he played was over 10 months ago. He is also playing a new position that will require him to go out into coverage every now and then. Hope he can adjust quickly.

He had a portion of the meniscus removed, right? Wouldn't he have a much higher chance of the knee becoming arthritic if the whole meniscus had been removed?

He will never be in coverage. The coaches were just evaluating strengths and weaknesses in the preseason, that is the only reason we saw him in coverage two or three times.

But you best believe we didn't pick him to cover a RB or TE.

So its better to deal with this situation where his past rep is creeping into the Texans? And some Texans fans are already questioning the pick anyways. I just want him fully healthy when he comes back and no lingering effects from it afterwards.

Some players like JD are injury prone and some like Watt are not. Just gotta accept that.

Repaired is having it stitched up.

That is what the 3-4 system is. He is technically a linebacker. If he just rushes on the edge every snap then it defeats the purpose of having a 3-4. He's not suited for this defense. He should be a DE in a 4-3 system. He will have to fall into short coverage at times.

No it isn't. You don't see Aldon Smith, Dumervil, Houston, etc. in coverage very often (maybe once a game).

Are you watching all of those games and looking at what they are doing in each assignment? Smith has picked off Tom Brady while in coverage.

Yeah and for the few times he was out there doing this it was clear that he was not comfortable. However, I have great trust in Romeo Crennel and he will find a way to maximize Clowney's talents. After that it will be up to Clowney to produce on the field. Only then will the "narrative" change and the questions about his desire will be laid to rest.

Yes, I watch a lot of football and know a lot about defenses, especially 3-4. You don't send out your best rush LB in coverage very often if at all, it is just a waste of talent. I understand doing it once or twice a game to help disguise and what not but any more than that is just a waste.
