It's as good as a 30.2% 3-point shooter. We'd be better off to let Terrence and DMo chuck it up from 3 than to have Big Al shooting midrange 2's. That's how "really good" it is.

Where did you get those numbers from? I'm interested to see how he compares to other 4's.

He's about 48% if you just use the last four years.

Even if true that is just one side of the ball.

Horford is an elite 4 who will be able to defend the likes of LMA and Griffin. Not to mention he can very easily play the 5 when Dwight has to take a break.

basketball-reference.com. You'll have to work through the numbers. Good luck.

You can count on one hand the number of guys in the league that should be shooting a substantial amount of long 2's. And that's being generous.

This might be one of the more a#$ backwards arguments I've ever heard.

An EFFICIENT 48% shooter from mid range (who shoots even higher %'s in his sweet spots) is somehow = to a bad 30% three point shot.

An efficient shot is an efficient shot. If its not an efficient shot its better to try for 3 points rather than 2. That's really the argument that stat geeks have with the long range 2. Its a bad shot, and you should shoot the 3's if you have inefficient shots from long 2. If you don't shoot it at an inefficient rate (Ala Scola with the Rockets, LMA with Portland, Dirk with the Mavs, etc.) than its a good shot. You are completely modulating the reasoning behind sports stat geeks making a case for the 3 over the 2.

All of this being said, you're first initial argument was the "Horford is a Grinder". Now you've somehow modulated your way into this realm to try and save face.

    .................

Also I'd be willing to bet that the only reason why Al Horford hasn't shot a higher rate of shots from 3 has been the fact that he's been playing the 5 exclusively since he's been in the league. Its only really a matter of time before he adds that shot to his game much like most other good shooting big has done up to this point.

Even LMA has made a point this training camp to note how he's going to be adding more 3's to his game against his will. You put Horford at the 4 next to Howard, and he's probably going to take a few 3's here and there, and I'd be willing to bet he wouldn't shoot it at 30% if he's been as efficient as he is at the long 2.

If you like LMA, there is no reason you shouldn't like Horford. Before he went down, Horford was shooting 49% from mid-range and was obviously adding corner 3s to his arsenal.

I would trade anything and everything we have outside of Bev, Harden, Daniels, Ariza, and Howard for Horford.........can't say the same for Rubio or Rondo.

In Morey's dream scenario we had:

    Bev
    Harden
    Parsons
    Bosh
    Howard

I'd go ahead and say that a line up of:

    Bev
    Harden
    Ariza
    Horford
    Howard

Is even better than the one Morey was about to go all in with.

I rate Horford really highly. People forget all that he is capable of because of his injury last season but the guy is an elite big and tough as nails unlike the "soft" Bosh.

The upgrade from TJ / DMo to Horford is much bigger and more impactful than the upgrade from Bev to "can only shoot bricks" Rubio

Well, it's why the Beatles broke up. Paul and John both wanted to be the leader. So Plow and dobro want to both be Sgt. Elias? Can't happen. (Can't blame you, though: Barnes was the worst.)

What's up with (not asking you, Plow) this Horford talk all of a sudden? Talk about us not having the horses to make the deal; why bring him up?

Love to have him, injury-prone and all, but goodness, Atlanta has to sell tickets SOMEhow (and Ferry's antics this summer didn't help).

48% 2 point shooter has .96 point per shot. The 30% 3 point shooter has .9 points per shot. There isn't too much of a difference there. I would think that the 2 point shooter gets to the FT line more frequently though.

    46.82% over last 4 years. That's the equivalent of 31.2% from 3.

Not on a pure jump shot. Defenses know long 2's are the worst shot in basketball. They are happy to give up those shots except in game situations. All they do defensively is try to crowd and get a hand up. On the other hand, we are seeing defenses lunging more and more at the better 3-point shooters.

Of course, if a shooter is in the paint area and is surrounded by defenders, they can create contact and get to the foul line. But most of those shots aren't jumpers. They are runners, floaters, layups, and dunks, shots on the move going towards the rim. Not the spot-up open jumper.

    More Zach Lowe:

Biggest name on a different team, if not Rondo?

It still could be Rondo. 40% chance he gets traded. After that, look at Indiana. If they come out awful, then maybe they start to see what the Hibbert/West market is. After that, I don't know there will be a bigger name. Amar'e Stoudemire is a big name but that would be a salary dump. Josh Smith falls into that category. One guy people are interested in, this is speculation, people are wondering about Eric Bledsoe. Is there lingering animosity? I wonder if they'll see what they can get. That's a name people will kick the door on. Maybe the Suns slam the door back in their face.

Who does not meet expectations? If Nets are a disaster, is there a market for Williams or Lopez. Let's say the Hawks get sold and (new owners) green light a tear down. Maybe the new owner makes Millsap or Horford available. You have to look at teams who won't/don't meet expectations. Time will tell on those teams.

LaMarcus Aldridge is saying all the right things. Verbal commitments are wonderful. If things go sour, those verbal things go out the window. I don't think that will happen but...

Hey I'm more than willing to take the Ringo or St. Oneill role. I'll hide in a foxhole with a dead Viet Cong on top of me to keep from getting stuck like a pig, and I'm pretty sure Ringo got laid more than all the other Beatles, and he's not a sellout like Paul.

I brought up Horford AND Millsap as examples of upgrades elsewhere on the roster that would create more variance ("someones" favorite word) than what an arguable upgrade at PG would be with someone like Rubio. The point was to not back yourself into a corner by perceived position of need. That's really it. You'll be shocked to find that "Some People" disagreed with that of course, and turned the argument to how Horford is a "grinder" and doesn't shoot the 3 at 40%, blah blah.

I don't think the Rockets have a great shot this year of trading for Horford, and I certainty don't claim to have insider sources telling one thing or another about it.

(actually I lied. I did make that claim here :)

This here is a classicholic post.

I see we are only in love with the three point shot.

A big man shooting 48% from midrange is darn good. And no its not equivalent of 31.2% from 3. Where do you come up with this madness.

Just admit you don't like to be wrong. Lol

It's really good for midrange shooting. If you compare it to 3 point shooting, there is no such thing as good midrange shooting.

    Aha. I feels ya.

Our insiders and so-called insiders all point to Morey looking to improve our point guard spot. Maybe he'll be content to get a better 4 in terms of playing defense or stretching the floor (in which case Millsap would be a nice "get", but again, Atlanta's in a bad place right now and won't look to trade its stars).

I keep going back to the fact that Morey has always been comfortable with switching things up at PG. Rafer-> Brooks -> Lowry -> Dragic -> Lin -> Beverley. It's happened over and over again, and we've got 3 others in the pipeline between Johnson, Canaan, and Llull.

Think of all the guys Morey has really pursued over the last 2-3 years:
LMA (supposedly "this close" to trading for him)
Bosh ("this close" to signing him), Dirk (offered him a max contract), Faried (cyberx mentioned Morey really wanted him), Gasol (almost traded an entire team for him), Nene (almost signed him), Love (obvious Morey target).

We've been through this song and dance before. Morey

    Didn't finish my thoughts there.....

Even Lowry, who probably has a legitimate claim as a top 5 PG, Morey told to hold off until we heard from Melo/LeBron/Bosh/etc.

Morey is pursuing a star or star-ish PF. That is who he's willing to give up our assets and flexibility for. Among the top PFs, Horford is really the only one that has never been linked to Houston, which in a weird way makes me think we've got a shot. Morey never makes the predictable move, and Horford would be just that......completely unpredictable.

FWIW, they say Horford is an A+ leader
