Again, I wouldn't trade the NOP 1st for him. I might do Canaan or Johnson, DMo or TJones, and a couple of 2nds.

How about we trade for Rubio, Martin(TPE) and Turiaf(TPE), then pick up Ilyasova or Bass with Terry and picks.

    PG: Rubio, Beverley
    SG: Harden, Martin
    SF: Ariza, Papaniko
    PF: Ilyasova, Motie
    C: Howard, Turiaf

End of the season we can move Ilyasova and Martin, cut Papaniko and try again in free agency.

Someone that has been keeping track want to post a cliff note of the current predictions?

Lately I have just been skimming the posts for stuff I need to deal with, but not really taking in what they say. What relevance does this latest cyberx post have?

Extending Rubio early really wouldn't make financial sense at all if your in Minnesota's front office.

WHy??? What's the Point? Where is my motivation?? ... player happiness... pfft please.

Why not wait till you can make him a RFA where the market dictates his salary beyond this year? If he's getting overpaid, let that happen elsewhere.

Motivation to trade? I don't see it either. You have a really, really good chance of getting Rubio back at a bargain rate next Summer in RFA, and with another year (where he is supposed to be the lead dog) of evidence, you should have a better indication if you don't have enough already, if he's your guy long term.

    ...............

The way I see it, the motivation to either extend, or get traded is all one-sided.

Even on a rookie scale contract, Rubio is getting paid FAIR MARKET VALUE vs. his competition on the market this year and next (his cap hold is very high for a rookie contract) if he was to sign his QO.

For the Wolves having Rubio at this stage of his career on the contract he's on if fair value, and he's a positive on-the-court asset for the team they currently have in place which has a chance to be competitive enough to challenge for the last playoff spot.

Anyone thinking that Flip & Minny have motivation to do anything with Rubio right now are out-thinking themselves. I don't see Rubio going anywhere this year, and I see Flip & Minny being willing to bet on restricted free agency next Summer as a way to keep him long term at fair market value.

Why??.... What is Minnesota's motivation to trade him now just because they didn't want to succumb to his agent's demands for a max contract extension that he almost certainly is not worth?

They can retain him long term on their terms allowing the market to dictate his price.

If they are going to risk losing him for nothing if that price is too high, do you think that's something they at the position they are in are going to lose sleep over?

Even getting a one year rental of Rubio this year with the current group they have will be more value than anything they are going to get offered in a trade by the end of the month.

I just don't see Minnesota's motivation to do anything right now. There should be no shock whatsoever that Rubio, Fegen, and Flip couldn't come to an agreement on an extension. There was no motivation from Flip to play ball with their unnecessary contract demands.

If Minny can't agree to an extension, is there any real value to holding onto him? Is he going to be a RFA, i.e. they can match any offer he gets at the end of the season?

Sorry, my knowledge of NBA contracts is clearly quite poor.

Yes... absolutely there is value in holding onto him. The value is he's really the perfect type of PG for the team they have this year. Much like Beverley in Houston, his on-the-court value is much higher than he would be on other teams with the team he's currently on because of fit.

Yes he will be a restricted free agent, and they will have the ability to match any offer he gets. Also his Qualifying Offer is pretty fair (6.17 mil) so I wouldn't rule out him signing him Qualifying Offer next Summer if the offers aren't there in order to be unrestricted in 2016 where teams are really setting themselves up to have loads of cap space for a number of different reasons.

If that's the case and Minnesota can get him to sign his QO, he's essentially a really good PG for their system & young players on a fair 2 year contract.

I don't see the motivation to move him quite honestly.

Yeah, a similar situation happened to Gordon Hayward and Eric Bledsoe this past year. Both those guys were unable to agree upon an extension with their team and became RFAs. In the summer, Hayward actually signed an offer with Charlotte, which Utah then matched. After a long holdout, Bledsoe agreed upon a contract with the Suns.

If minny believes that they won't be able to agree to an extension with Rubio, they can either allow him to become an RFA and match the offer he signs elsewhere or refuse to match and risk losing him for nothing. The third option is (similar) to happened to Harden. Minny can find a team willing to pay him what he desires and trade him (before he becomes an RFA). That way they get something in return, Rubio gets paid and the third team gets their player.

Some people here are speculating that this third scenario is exactly what will happen.

That's been known for a while now. Glad we have official verification from Fegan though.
