Bagwell's not getting in the HoF and it's for a very obvious reason. He lacked that often overlooked "sixth tool": Hitting for New York/Boston.
The baseball writers are extremely self-righteous, and Clemens killed any chance he may have remotely had when he told Richard Justice "I don't give a rat's @$$ about the Hall of Fame."
Where are these before/after pics? Never seen em. Bagwell filled out normally IMO. He also never hit 70 homeruns nor became a much better hitter in his 30's like the well known steroid users.
Have you seen what weight lifters look like after they stop lifting weights? They either get fat or "get small" and it happens pretty quickly. Bagwell didn't stop working out, he just stopped power lifting, so he didn't get fat, he just trimmed down and got "small".
I don't care whether Bagwell did or didn't use PED's. The whole era was tainted and it's hard to pick out who did and didn't partake. That said... that website is one guy's opinion not the bible. For all we know Cammy tried them when he did after seeing what they did for Bagwell and or other teammates.
Here's an undated picture of Bagwell from his playing days: Here's one from when he was our hitting coach in 2010: Is that really considered "deflating"?
I'm completely on the non-steroid side of all of this. But I think it's worth pointing out for completeness that his '94 season was insane compared to his entire career. If there wasn't a strike (and if he didn't break his hand), he would have been on pace for a 60+ HR season--with half his games in the Astrodome. His isolated power that year is a ridiculous aberration from any good season before or after. That being said, 1 single statistically odd season doesn't make a case, and certainly isn't relevant when people are trying to argue a case based on his change in size after he retired (which would indicate he was "using" all the way through). In fact, I'd argue that those 2 facts being incongruent presents an argument that he *wasn't* juicing. If he was, the 1994-type inflated stats should have persisted (esp. when he got to Enron)...OR he should have "changed sizes" after 1994 if he immediately stopped.
Yep for all we know Clemens, Pettitte and A-Rod roided up after seeing how well they worked for Jeter. I mean look how much his numbers jumped in his 3rd and 4th seasons. If you wanna blanket the whole era, then don't pick and choose based on random speculation.
Bagwell is my all-time favorite Astro and baseball player. Dude could do it all and was better than Biggio. I believe they both did steroids and their postseasons really really pissed me off, but hopefully they both make the Hall. Houston usually gets hated on. Olajuwon is often an afterthought when talking greatest centers and players... smh. Thank God current players look for his tutelage to keep him relevant and increase his mystique. IIRC, only Jimmy Fox bettered Jeff's consecutive seasons of 100/100/100. Dude was a machine.
Or were you being facetious and were actually referring to the photo where it looked like his shirt was 6 times too big for him.
Guilty until always. No due process nor benefit of the doubt in a good old-fashioned witch hunt. Shameless bull****.
No. I'm saying that the picture of him in that white uniform, for whatever reason, makes him look way bigger than any other picture I can find of him. Even this one above doesn't seem like that big of a change from his post playing days. (Clever move finding a picture of him in Vince Wilfork's shirt, though. Well done.) I guess Bagwell should have just gotten fat like Frank Thomas. Then no one could question this crap.
