DMo in the post - Good

DMo shooting 3's - Bad

Jones on the court - Bad

Ish shooting 3's - BAD

Black on the roster - BAD!!!

Adrien - Better than I thought, perhaps decent spot minutes.

 

This game was kind of distressing to me, but there were some positives too.
-Ariza looked like a great fit for the starters, and even with Jones and Howard sucking the starting five played some pretty good basketball at points
-Although Kostas may struggle with the speed of the game for quite a while, I was fairly impressed with his poise and fundamentals
-Classic D-Mo "wait, this guy is really good" game. I've seen too many of these to get my hopes up, but seriously, how great would it be to have THIS D-Mo full time?


On the other hand:
-The second unit needs a better creator or McHale needs to call some damn plays, because Ish Smith dribbling around for 15 second stretches at a time was killing me. This was alleviated once D-Mo got going so hopefully he'll be a full-time offensive spark in the future.
-Interior defense looked pretty shoddy
-Terrence Jones looked like a junior high player who wandered onto the court and found himself in an NBA game.

I think the unit you saw as the second unit (smith, black, ) was really the 3rd unit. the true second unit came in with 8 min to go in the game. Those players being canaan and troy daniels mixed with greek guy, dmo, and a adrien.

Probably a fair point - although neither Canaan or Troy were great, they did provide enough shooting that Donatas had room to operate.

 

Anyone else think Canaan looked absolutely inept in running the offense?

 

You think DMo only has one post move? Really? You should probably watch him play more then. He has post moves for days, the only issue is finishing.

 

I think Canaan looked kind of skittish trying to run the offense. He tried to do too much dribbling and then creating a shot; reminded me of the Moochie Norris dribbling. He hit a nice pull up 3 though, and that's one of his strengths. Daniels didn't really seem into the flow of the game. Possibly they were just sitting too long on the bench.

agreed. Dmo has I'd say 4-5 post moves including a nice baby hook. That's the strength of his game.

I noticed this during Summer League. Even though he's getting assists, he seems completely clueless on orchestrating an offense and promoting decent ball movement. It would be forgivable if he was consistently breaking his man down off the dribble, but that isn't the case. I honestly think both Nick Johnson and Troy Daniels have more PG skills than Canaan.

 

IMO, the backup facilitator (PG or SG) is more of a critical concern than our starting 4.

If that guy is Ish Smith, so be it

 

I hate to say it cause I wanted him out there with the 2nd unit, but he looked a little shaky out there. And he sucks at inbounding the ball dating to last season lol.

As for my thoughts on the game, I was really impressed with Ariza. I think he'll fit in like a glove here. The problem is the bench.

Hopefully Terry has something left because I wasn't encouraged with what I saw tonight. DMo seemed to play really well but we'll see how consistent he is.

Smith is fast but doesn't really bring anything to the table offensively. Hopefully at some point Johnson is good enough to slide over to that backup PG spot.

Jones didn't really seem like he was in the game but the starting job is his to lose still.

I really want Adrian to get into the rotation somehow. Maybe go small with DMo at center and Adrian at PF in the 2nd unit?

Papa look aiight, clearly had some jitters but he better develop quickly with the money he's getting paid.

Beverley, Harden and Dwight all looked fine, except for Dwight fouling out in 15 min of course lol.
