I'm like... 7-8 in on season 4. Best so far for me which caught me off guard completely. So far there has been almost no McNulty - which might be why I like it so much. That character is just a butt hurt emo guy.

I'd rate the seasons so far...
    6.5 (with a strong finish)
4.5 (tried to be deep but missed the ball IMO)
6.5 (I wanted it to be great but it just didn't do it for me. And like the seasons before it, there's no real resolution at the end, the good guys don't get any satisfaction - GoT's-ish)
    8.0

Think that's the main problem here, you're used to good guys winning in these kind of shows, that's not what Wire is about. It's supposed to show how cold and unjust things are in cities like Baltimore. The cops are not supposed to solve every crime and bust all criminals.

Season 4 upped the humor about 3 notches, and I love that.

Some great news, especially as I wanted to re-watch everything again:

HBO is finally releasing The Wire in HD this month

Share on Facebook (15k) Tweet (971) Share Share (10) Pin
Making good on a promise made earlier this year, HBO's critically acclaimed masterpiece The Wire will finally be available in 16:9 HD starting later this month. Promos for the remastered series started appearing back in September, but HBO told us at the time that the new version wasn't ready yet. Now, waiting fans will soon get what they've been clamoring for.

Starting on December 26th, all 60 episodes will be available for streaming on HBO Go. Cable fans will also be able to marathon the series starting that day on HBO Signature, running all the way through to December 30th. The whole remaster will be made available on Digital HD — meaning iTunes, Google Play, Xbox Video, and Vudu — on January 5th. Blu-ray owners will have to wait until next summer for their physical copies.

Awwww man! I spend I think close to $200 earlier this year to buy all the seasons on DVD!

Just started watching The Sopranos last week and its awesome as well. Only on Season 2. Is it as good as The Wire and Breaking Bad?

Totally different shows. Breaking Bad was all about "what will happen next" suspense. The Wire isn't like that. When it comes to quality of writing, acting, setting, etc. then yes, The Wire is as good, if not better than, Breaking Bad.

Annnnnnd I misread your question. Sorry about that.

The Sopranos is good, but I think it has arguably aged the worst of any "prestige" show from that era. Some of the technology, plots, etc. in the series are comical now. Plus, there are flat-out bad episodes of The Sopranos in the later seasons. I feel like The Wire and Breaking Bad avoided that.

They're running a Wire HD marathon now on HBO Signature, for the brehs here that have that channel.

(I sadly don't have it, but will download the episodes in the upcoming days and weeks).

If you're going HBO for pay, may I recommend:

Deadwood, Treme, Veep, The Life and Times of Tim, Boardwalk Empire, Silicon Valley, just for starters

It looks really good, and makes the show feel much newer. I haven't watched close to all of it, but it's been fun popping and remising on season 1 a little bit. Looking forward to seeing bits and pieces of a new remastered season 2 tomorrow, 3 the next day, etc. I may do a complete rematch on HBO Go later, I believe rewatching at least once or twice is the only way to do that show justice.

I was going through some links I had and came across these from a radio show in Dallas that I listen to. I thought I'd posted them on "The Wire" threads on CF but I guess I forgot over the years. Some pretty decent interviews with a bunch of characters conducted by the BaD radio crew on Dallas' The Ticket.

Why did you bump both threads?

I posted the same thing in both that's why. Some people seem to prefer posting in one thread over the other. So when someone searches "The Wire" they can see my links in whichever thread they prefer. No biggie.

Me too, those people just don't get it. Season 1 was probable my favorite -- it is just dense and complicated, the way i like it. I think I had to watch it a couple times before i truly appreciated it.
