Yeah, hugely favorable contract for the Astros. The kind of contract that helps you build a juggernaut.
Aside from CLE, there is n other city that can combine the massive heatbreaking losses plus relatively few championships. our football teams have never made it to a conference championshp...much less a super bowl our baseball team has appeared in exactly one world series in 50 years...they were swept. Houston's sports history is miserable. Having said all that... thank God Altuve played today and won the batting title.
Exactly. Add, the Rockets' championships having an asterisk (VERY glad we won though). The fact TEN went to the SuperBowl a couple years after winning adds insult to injury. I was surprised a poster even attempted to credit Houston for the Miracle. It goes deeper.. 1) Houston has to reside in a state with arguably the greatest football team.. a team who has fans born and raised in Houston.. some of those fans actually think F the Texans. 2) Arguably the 3rd greatest NBA team. San Antonio is a decent city and good for them, but why couldn't we do that? We're the king of sports that don't matter though. CLE might still the worst. Few championships, and the old Browns (Ravens) have balled ever since leaving. Insult to injury.
Probably just a misunderstanding. I'm not saying Houston would've lost had MJ never retired... just saying MJ thing deserves mention. I'm speaking from a national level. Regardless, Houston won fair and square and I'm glad we won.
BULL****. agree with everything you said, and share the pathos, with this notable and firm objection. They won it fair and square, and if you check your early nineties history (where are you, tinman?) you'll note that Mr. Elie and the Rockets generally kicked MJ's ass in head-to-head matchups. You can't say "MJ would have won" any more than you can say "Dream would have won." That's why you need to play the games. But MJ went to minor league baseball and couldn't hit the ball with a tennis racket. His problem. We have two legit rings. And, I firmly believe that the Rox would've taken the bulls in 5 or 6 both years. MJ was Elie's b****. /rant
His play this year is the perfect example of why the whole "playing for contract" thing is overblown. Altuve got paid, and yet this year made adjustments that reduced his strikeout rate and gained more power. Congrats on his title. Great year. And truly the first year we have something to celebrate going into the offseason.
I remember listening to the last game of the the 1983 season, and Jose Cruz had a shot at the batting title. He either started the day in the lead or just a little under. The Astros beat the Reds 3-2, a young unknown kid named Jeff Heathcock started and pitched a complete game, and Cheo went 0-for-4 to drop down to .318. People nowadays talk about Madlock and Smith in that race, and they don't mention Cheo at all.
He went 0-4 the last 2 games of the season. Madlock was busy not playing and pulling himself from games.
ya, I had forgotten the 0-fer the day before. I just remember Elston talking it up during the PBP, and I remember with each strikeout (first three ABs were strikeouts) the top avg getting farther out of reach.
Congrats to Jose... still remember skipping out to go to the mid-week day game that he made his debut in because I felt he would be the next "special" Astro. Sucks that the vast majority of this city doesn't care about it... he deserves better.
More like an underdog. Robbie Cano's got the edge at WAR, OBP, SLG, OPS, HR, and RBI, while playing in a pitcher's park. And, of course, better name recognition. I'd be surprised if he doesn't win his 5th silver slugger in a row and 6th overall.
