The rub is this: Rubio is going into restricted free agency and can be controlled. He will have a cap hold of $11,651,197.50 as long as he is restricted. But we can mutually agree to remove the restricted status and make him unrestricted thereby lowering his cap hold to $8,854,910.70 which means if we can trade away Ariza and clear the cap of everyone but H&H and Rubio we can create $14.3 million of cap space if the cap goes up to $66 million and $18.3 million of cap space if the cap goes up to $70 million.

Or we could wind up with Rubio signing for the qualifying offer and having $16-$20 million of cap space to sign free agents with next off season.

    Lots of options with Rubio.

Team already lacks perimeter defenders. Ariza should be close to untradeable

It would help a lot if he could shoot or defend...

Ricky Rubio is a top 3 defending point guard right now and I could make a strong case he's the best defensive point in the game.

Moving your arms all over the place and frantically chasing and trying to play your man tight does not equal good defense either.

The list of 2014 restricted free agents to be is one sorry list of players.

I am buying that Daryl Morey would love to swoop in and steal away Ricky Rubio, but I don't know about other players on that list. Tristan Thompson is nothing special and has a skill set that is becoming obsolete, plus, some idiot will overpay him, so he is a non-option.

Bismack Biyombo is intriguing, and is well liked by advanced stats. He is a buy low candidate, and possibly the answer to the Rockets' backup C problem.

Also, Rajon Rondo just had surgery on his hand, and is out for a couple of months.

It appears to me that Houston mostly stands pat until January/February. Maybe we will see a disposable player traded over the next few weeks for a second round pick--I am looking at you, Donatas Motiejunas, and maybe also you, Isaiah Canaan--but I don't think we'll see anything significant until January/February.

This team will be better than most of you guys think. Better than last year. And the Rockets turn into a legit championship contender with a major quantity-for-quality trade or two in January/February.

No he's another overrated foreign player that the rockets don't need to acquire. If he was Tony Parker then you would be on to something.

This is why it's hard to take you seriously sometimes, when you over exaggerate to make your point.

And Rubio is a good defender but he's not a top 3 defensive PG, let alone the best.

I'm assuming this is a shot at Beverley?

Considering he made 2nd team all defense ahead of a big name guy like Rubio... I'd say he's a better defender.

If that was a shot at Bev in favor of Rubio then mores the pity. Our fans should appreciate how good a defender Bev has been for us. He has his flaws but not on D, he puts real pressure on the ball handler with his physical play.

    Question:

What would you be willing to pay each of Beverley and Rubio as a restricted free agent?

They both will be restricted free agents next summer.

    Related question:

What do you think the market for each of these players will be?

Short answer to first question: an extra year and small percentage raise over the market. IOW, Market can only offer 4-year deals w/4.5% raises. I'd be willing to give each guy slightly above what they can get on the open market.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Question #2:
Teams in need of PGs next summer: Knicks, Lakers, Pistons, Bucks, Mavs, Heat, Kings,

Available starting caliber FA PGs next summer: Rubio, Rondo, Beverley, Jackson(restricted), Dragic, Knight, Lin, Sergio Rodriguez

Phil Jackson has never had a premier PG on any of his teams. They're always defenders/spot-up shooters playing off the ball. I don't know how he would value guys like Rondo, Dragic, and possibly Rubio. I'm thinking Bev, Knight, and/or Jackson at a reasonable salary may be what he is after at the PG spot.

I can see the Pistons, Mavs, and Heat chasing Rondo and/or Rubio hard.

    Lakers? - Don't know man.

We seen what restricted free agency ultimately did to Bledsoe this season. Wolves supposedly were willing to go 4/64 on Bledsoe. And they're not willing to give Rubio (at least right now) more than 4/44, which is less than what PHX was originally offering Bledsoe. It feels like to me that most NBAers value Bledsoe over Rubio. Makes me wonder if Rubio will only get offered something like 4/48 on the restricted market next season, which could be low enough to entice them to sign the qualifying offer and try again in the summer of 2016.

I have a difficult time seeing any team offering Rubio a 4-year max deal right now. But we've got a whole season ahead of us. If Rubio raises his percentages (especially his 3-point percentages) then I can see his value going to the max quickly.

Rubio is definitely a good defender, I'd peg him top 10, maybe top 5 at his position (top 3 is too generous).

I'd take Rubio if we could get him. We don't need a shooter, we need another playmaker, which Rubio is. A Rubio/Harden backcourt with Dwight holding down the middle is potent. Shooting is something that can be taught and fixed over time but Rubio is an elite passer which can't be taught. Also, remember that Rubio was drafted and developed in Minny.....

Rondo vs Rubio, still take Rubio. Rondo is the better overall player but I think his attitude would poison the locker room.
