not a fan, but if it's to be done, it should not be open access, imo. i know argyle isd here in tx keeps handgun carriers under wrap.

good luck to hansen and her pink handgun named "lucy". surely there's no psychological issues there.

The gun is only as good as the training of the person carrying it. If you think some 30 year old chick teaching 3rd grade with no prior firearms experience is going to take a four hour class and be ready to have a gun fight in a school then you're nuts.

Actually, I read something a while back about a Utah teacher's gun going off while she was in the bathroom. Classic.

The ultimate test of this... the first time a gunfight breaks out in a school and children are caught in the crossfire.

Or a teacher shoots someone by mistake (someone that looked like they had a gun).

I really don't see how this makes schools any safer.

I would not want teachers in my kid's school armed.

I'm no statistician, but it seems that the probability of an accidental shooting (involving the teacher's gun) would be higher than the probability of encountering an active shooter.

    Actually
It is more about the following
    1. Some kid getting the gun and shooting someone
    2. Some teacher flipping out
    3. Some Teacher Mistakenly firing it

Imagine a teacher calling the Principal and saying "I can't find my gun"

There needs to be strict requirements concerning this.

    1) Advanced gun safe must be required
    2) Proof a pistol training course.
    3) Legal & medical files on teachers must be presented.

I'm a huge pro gun activist but when there's children around special & strict requirements should be met if you plan to have a gun in their general vicinity 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Teacher accidentally shoots self in leg at school

SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah elementary school teacher who was carrying a concealed firearm at school accidentally shot herself in the leg when the weapon discharged in a faculty bathroom shortly before classes started Thursday morning, officials said.

The teacher at Westbrook Elementary School, in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville, was severely injured when the bullet entered and exited her leg, and she was rushed to a hospital, Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley said. She was in good condition and alert at the hospital by midmorning, Horsley said.

Horsley said he didn't know if she would be released from the hospital Thursday, but he said her injuries were not life-threatening.

No other faculty or students witnessed the shooting, but they might have heard the gunshot or seen the teacher as she was taken out of the school to the hospital, he said.

Horsley said several faculty members went to the restroom after hearing the gunshot and came to the teacher's aid.

Classes were continuing as usual, and crisis counselors were available, Horsley said.

Police officers in the Granite School District are equipped with AR15 and M16 rifles in the case of a threat such as a gunman. The district police chief said earlier this year that officers do not keep them on hand and instead keep them locked in a rack inside their cars. Campus police were not at the school Thursday morning when the shooting took place, Horsley said.

Officials were still investigating how the gun discharged. "This just appears at this point in time to be an accident," he said.

Horsley wouldn't release details about the woman or what she taught, but he noted that she was carrying the weapon legally with a concealed-firearm permit.

Utah is among the few states that allow people with concealed-weapons permits to carry guns in public schools, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Teachers are not required to disclose that they are carrying a weapon, and administrators are prohibited from asking if they carry or barring them from bringing their weapons.

Educators have said they have no way of determining how many Utah teachers are armed, but gun-rights advocates estimated several years ago that 1 percent, or about 240 teachers in the state, are licensed to carry weapons.

The Granite School District requires teachers who carry guns at school to keep the weapons with them at all times, including inside a bathroom stall, Horsley said.

Some people are surprised to learn about Utah's law and ask why teachers are allowed to have guns, he said.

"That's frankly not a question we can answer," Horsley said. "That is a question for the state legislature."

"This is exactly what we are working against," said Miriam Walkingshaw, co-founder of Utah Parents Against Gun Violence, which is opposed to guns in schools.

The risk of having any guns near children is greater than any risk teachers hope to prevent, she said.

The lack of disclosure about which teachers are carrying guns is a problem, Walkingshaw said. "I feel like I should have a right to know whether my child's teacher is carrying a gun," she said.

Gun-rights advocates said teachers can act faster than law enforcement in the first few minutes of any attack at a school.

"The idea of having these firearms in these schools is that there's no way anyone can prevent a mass shooting from starting," Utah state Rep. Curt Oda, R-Clearfield, said Thursday. "The idea is to either be able to slow it down or stop it and to minimize the carnage."

For several years, gun instructors have been offering free training to teachers, an effort Oda has been involved in. He estimates at least 500 teachers have gone through classes in recent years.

He said Utah has allowed teachers to carry concealed weapons for 13 years and this is the first problem he can recall.

"It's an unfortunate accident. She is human," Oda said. "And unfortunately these anti-gun people think that everybody should be completely mechanical and not have any accidents at all."

Are the teachers actually trained to know how to perform if a "Sandy Hook" situation were to happen?

Wouldnt want a repeat of the Walmart story where the civilian had his CC and was going for the Husband but was unaware of the wife and ended up getting killed.

Myth #4: More good guys with guns can stop rampaging bad guys.

    Fact check:
    • Mass shootings stopped by armed civilians in the past 30 years: 0
    • Chances that a shooting at an ER involves guns taken from guards: 1 in 5

Wow those seem to be completely non biased and not at all misleading. I wonder why anti-gun agendas fail so pathetically all the time? People who don't own guns know so much more than gun owners, seems like they should easily win those arguments.

That's the number 1 fault with the anti gun Nazis. Half the arguments they give against guns actually promote owning a gun.

Why does sensible gun policy fail in most places? Because there is a powerful lobby that is able to exploit a broken government so that policies the majority of Americans support are generally never even brought to a vote, for fear of them being enacted. This lobby has also been able to engineer a newly-minted set of constitutional rights recently, again, due to a broken government system.

We all do know though that you take an especial joy in discussing mmechanical vagaries of various types of firearms as if it's quantum mechanics and FAR TOO DIFFICULT to even contemplate regulation - which is dumb.

    You are right.

School shootings on that scale rarely happen anyways. Just dont want a teacher to in danger themselves or others without the proper training
