So much fail in this thread, between Nomar/whatever he is and others. It's about as much fail as the Missouri Compromise.

Slavery was flourishing, not dying in 1860. It was the literal backbone of the entire southern economy/society. The South seceded because they wanted states' rights TO HAVE SLAVERY. Not some grand premise on federalism or tariffs or some other bullsh-t that's been invented later.

They LOVED DEM SUM SLAVING. THey didn't even like it when Northerners talked meanly about slavery, pitched sh-tfits about Northern refusal to catch fugitive slaves and were determined to export slavery to about as many places as possible.

It's all in the documents from the time - it is not controversial.

    This.

It was the American Dream for many a Southerner at that time. Just like now how self-professed Ayn Rand fanatics poo poo any policies for social umbrella (whether they use it themselves is a different matter) even if they're earning far less than what a wealthy person would benefit immensely from such an enforced political stance.

I'd also mention that limiting slavery was an end game for the 50 year old dance of balancing Senate seats. Politics was already divisive long before. Even Henry Clay, who was seen as the Great Compromiser, could be viewed upon as prolonging a festering gangrene wound in American society as the status quo wasn't that great to begin with.

The schmuck before Lincoln was attempting to continue what Clay did many moons before.

I don't see how the Civil War wasn't mostly about slavery when slavery was the most dominant political topic for the past half century. Sure there were cultural divides and resentments. Talking about that is fine and dandy after acknowledging slavery's impact.

The civil war was about slavery. But it was slavery as a means of economics.

The North was already into the industrialization, and the southern economy was agriculture based which was dependent on slavery. The South rather than embrace the industrial age and re-organize their economy thought they'd stick with the slaves.

That kind of change can't happen overnight, which is why the way they did it resulted in war. If slavery had been phased out over, say 5-10 years, things would have been different.

Also, when it comes to the Scottish independance vote, 12 councils are in and the No vote seems to be getting quite a lead

    Yes
    335,482
    No
    381,025

Very interesting that the Shetland Islands are voting overwhelmingly "No." I figured it would be the opposite.

With 20 of 32 councils in the new results are
    Yes
    779,689
    No
    965,790

Scottish Independence is looking like it's going to be dead.

Glasgow will probably determine the whole thing.

I am surprised the race is really this close.

Is the turn out really 86% of registered voters? If so, that is pretty amazing in itself.

Well it's a pretty important election, I'd like to think if succession was on the ballot in Texas we'd have a similar turnout.

There was Southern resentment that came from the North and European powers profiting on the cash crops produced by the south. The North facilitated shipping, trade, finance and capital for Southern states. They were also a consumer of those raw materials that fueled their manufacturing base. So in that sense, their industrialization was catalyzed by the south.

Of course, economies adjust to their conditions. Maybe if the cotton gin didn't make plantations ridiculously profitable, the south would've found reason to diversify on their own rather than by the boot of carpetbaggers.

54% NO to 45% YES, not enough outstanding ballots. Sky News has called it for NO.

Well Glasgow was going to be "Yes" all along, and it's Scotland's most populous city, but not enough of them voted "Yes" to swing the election. As soon as that vote came in closer than expected, it was ove.r

The Glasgow "victory" was not big enough. YES is losing everywhere else.

Parts of Glasgow are very pro-Brit so not surprised that Glasgow wasn't going to be enough to carry the Yes vote.

On a related not one thing similar between the US and UK is troglodytes on the social media. Andy Murray is getting hate tweets after his rather mild tweet in support of pro-independence including bringing up the Dunblane school massacre. Murray is from Dunblane.
