I blame both Swoopes and Strong. Strong should have emphasized, knowing its a pretty inexperienced quarterback out there and Swoopes obviously should have ran the clock.
Swoopes was supposed to ignnore his OC's instructions to go no huddle and run the play clock down to 0? In waht universe would this be desirable behavior? With 4 minutes left and UCLA with all 3 timeouts, Texas HAD to get a first down, period, to run the clock out. No exceptions, no if's, no nothing. Hurry up was probably the best way to do it, given that it's the only thing that worked all half, the more I think about it hte more completely defensible it seems.
I think the problem is that the way they did it, a 1st down would have only run about 40 seconds off the clock, meaning that getting one would still leave them needing more of them. OkieState is known for their slow hurry-up - basically, get to the line immediately and then just eat up time there. They probably should have done something like that - it prevents the defense from making any adjustments since you could snap the ball any second, but also eats up all clock.

Lol- if only they called the "hurry up and run clock and make first downs" offense that they probably practiced approximately never with the unit on the field, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Poor coaching!
It doesn't really require any practice or prep - you do exactly what they did, but instead of snapping the ball with 25 seconds on the playclock, you just stand there until there's 5 or less. They could have run the exact offense they did and used 40 more seconds had they done that. That way, if they got the first down, they would have actually made some progress in running the clock down. Spread teams do this all the time when trying to bleed clock.
Is Texas a spread team that does this all the time? So not only do you lose the tempo of the no huddle, allow the defense to get properly aligned, and you risk a false start penalty for longer, but you do this all so that and would have given UCLA the ball back with only 30 secon ds fewer with all 3 timeouts Give it up Major. In no way shape or form is this newly minted tactic of yours an obvious choice in that situation. Even without hindsight it's a wash, and with hindsight it wouldn't have made a sh-t worth of difference
and another one bites the dust: http://blog.chron.com/sportsupdate/...-ninth-player-dismissed-from-team/#26321101=0 man what is going on in Austin???
I'm sure this is totally going to help recruiting. "Hey, I just graduated HS, moved out of my parents house but I'm so ready to play at UT! Just what I wanted, another Dad watching my every move for the next 4 years! I think I'll go to aTm." This guy won't last another 2-3 years, max. I get what he's doing, but these aren't the 1950's "Coach with a Flattop, obey me now boy!!" decades any longer.
I agree but time will tell. He will change a lot of minds if he can get Malik Jefferson. I just don't know why Malik would choose Texas over A&M right now especially with how good their freshman DE is doing. Fans just need a little time to sober up from Mack. This, "whip these boys into line" attitude will fade away if we don't win. If we have back to back 6 win seasons then I can see him getting fired after only 2 years but I'm sure it will be 3 before he gets a major evaluation. At least Saban will be waiting by the phone.
I'm pretty sure Texas has practiced eating clock before. And given their offense and QB, I would certainly hope they've done it from the spread formation. There's no additional risk of a false start - they shouldn't be in their stance the whole time. But even if they were, yeah, I would hope they have practiced being in their stance for a bit as it pretty much happens in every single game you win outside of last minute comebacks. In that one series, they would have run 45 additional seconds off the clock without changing any of the plays they ran. Of course it's obvious - everyone except you (and Coach Strong) seems to understand that running the clock was a good idea there. Your proposal of the best way to get a first down is pointless if getting the first down doesn't run any clock - you'd just need another one anyway. The idea is to run as much clock as possible - 2 minutes if you don't get a first down, 4 minutes if you get 1, etc - and then force the other team to go 80 yards with little time and an inexperienced QB. It became irrelevant only because of the punt return. But without that, less time (even at 4ish minutes) is still beneficial because it forces UCLA to make different decisions in regards to running the ball and/or 4th downs.
Yup. He's like Jerry Seinfeld, breaking up with recruits for the smallest of reasons. I heard Estelle's pants made a whooshing sound, now he's gone. At TAMU you can Tweet, chill with LeBron and still go to the UT frat parties, we don't care. Listen to Drake at pro day, whatever, man.
Wrong choice of words. Strong is not breaking up with "recruits;" he is breaking up with the players already at UT. Now if this system of suspending everyone continues well into the future, then I will be annoyed.
For every recruit who wants college to be one big party, there is another that drops quotes like this: “Only a man is going to get through that program,” Vahe said. “If you want to be a boy then don't go. Simple as that. I'm going. I want to become a man. Simple as that.” Patrick Vahe, no. 2 Center in the country. Currently committed to UT.
You mean the guy Mack Brown recruited? You honestly think that perspective is 1:1 with guys? Again, it's a wait and see approach with how Strong is able to recruit.
