I knew a guy who went kayaking and his kayak flipped over.

On Labor Day I kayaked from near Kinkaid to Fonde Recreation just below the Sabine Street bridge - it was 4+ hours of very hard paddling. The water was low (it is released from a reservoir upstream) so it was slow going. Other than all the plastic trash from the storm sewers, it was very pretty and serene and hard to believe you were in the middle of a large urban environment. Lots of birds and some fish. Occasional stinky water but for the most part it was fine. It was on my bucket list for a long time and I am glad I did it but next time I would probably not go so far.

I canoed 15 miles of it and saw two alligators near my boat, definitely would do it again.

There is a weird stench around the outfall points of storm sewers. I noticed it when passing by the larger pipes. Most of the way does not really smell.

I did it a few years back and I really enjoyed it. I agree with Pipe exactly- I paddled for about 4 hours and it was not easy, low water level and not a strong stream so a lot of it is up to you to power there. If you go past downtown, it goes downhill fast with lots of trash. My advice- do NOT go past Allen's landing. the downtown part of it is very well maintained and pretty picturesque. Might be good to go after it rains.

Also, if you bring your own kayak, gotta have a good exit strategy. We parked our cars near a landing spot on the east side of downtown (which is why we went past allens landing), and it was not a good set up. There are companies that take people down there (you'll see them on the weekend) and they take care of the drop off and pickup so you dont have to. It's tricky to have a car where you land and then you gotta go get the car that dropped you off. At that point, you might be so exhausted that you dont want to deal with the run around.

Overall, great experience. Would definitely do again.

I did it once. I got into a zone and once I snapped to and looked around at my surroundings I realized that I was somewhere out in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. I'm still paying off the bill for the Coast Guard rescue to this day.

I didn't like it as much as other places in TX (done it several times). The smell was nauseating. It gets even worse as you go paddle further up like near Highway 6 and Terry Hershey Park.

Are there any gators while you are canoeing down the bayou since I see there in all the lake areas in Sugar Land, Richmond, and Katy? How dirty is this water?

Did they try to attack you? There are croc attacks on kayakers in Austrialia all the time.
