I'm talking tennis, racquetball, squash, and even handball. The pure workout you get from these is the most holistic workout I've ever experienced playing a sport. Your legs get worked, your arms get worked, your back gets worked... it's just ceaseless. Not to mention that these high energy, reaction-oriented sports are pretty much the best way to lose fat quickly.

It sucks that these sports don't have bigger followings. They deserve it.

    Martial arts / combative sports.

You want to work as many muscle groups as possible in high energy and fast reaction time try dealing with someone trying to kick or punch you in the head or choke you out.

For cardio nothing matches swimming, and less impact on the joints.

I enjoy basketball the most, but it never touches the work I get in swimming.

aside from the acrobatics and physical pursuits that go on in my bedroom, the answer is probably yes.

Badminton and ping pong is a better cardio workout than tennis.

Swimming is probably the best. Full court basketball is underrated.

    Tennis is good though.

Diversity is the key. Just don't play DotA for 8 hours a day thinking you're gonna get ripped.

Running in all of it's forms by far is the most effective workout. Skiing, especially Cross Country Skiing, is an intense workout.

I'd put biking up there with swimming too for low impact / high cardio workout. Plus it's much more beautiful and social vs a swimming pool

And yeah, cross country skiing is likely #1

I included it because it's essentially the same thing as squash and racquetball--racquetball was invented directly as a result of handball, actually. There may not be racquets, but the physical utility involved is really no different from a racquet sport.

Being in Texas, I find it awfully curious no one has mentioned calf roping, bull riding or barrel racing.

    EDIT: Forgot Chuckwagon racing

(Singles) Tennis is a tremendous cardio workout and Ping Pong is supposedly great for improving cognitive function.

That said, not a big fan of individual sports (golf excepted). Just not as fun as playing on a team.

Texas: where the men are men and the cows are nervous.

I've always been partial to the tortilla discus and the watermelon shotput, myself.

Do they arms really get a workout though? As much as in swimming, I mean?

Swimming is probably the best overall workout, as everything gets worked.
