Okay. He might want to go to the NFL. He might not. Some guys do, some guys don't. To assume the clock is ticking and his days at TAMU are numbered is just speculation. Nothing more.

Anyone who wasn't wearing bright red knew that Sumlin would leave UH withing a couple years of success. I don't see that here. This is a good spot for him. He has the best talent to pick from in the US and (unlike Saban) he hasn't spent time in the NFL in his career. Seems like a weird jump to nfl head coach.

Which is why the post you quoted, which was about the contract holding him back, said...

Not saying that he will leave for the NFL, but if the NFL wants him and he wants the NFL, no contract is really going to stand in the way of that.

Which is a non statement. The contract is financially punishing to Sumlin and the NFL team who "wants" him thus reducing the "want".

Eh - people say that crap all the time and it never holds. I remember how the Big12 was going to make A&M pay so much to leave and then meh. If a coach wants to go elsewhere, they generally find a way to make it happen and the team works to accommodate them.

If it really came down to it, all Sumlin has to do is say he hates A&M and wants out. What is A&M going to do? Keep him and make him coach for them? Coaches have all the power in these situations, no matter what the contract says.

    True.

However, I read an article in the USA Today where Sumlin was asked about the NFL. He said that he and his wife enjoy living in College Station and all the moving has been very difficult for his wife as she likes to become part of their community.

Sounds like Sumlin has no designs on leaving.

Even if he would think about it, the average NFL head coach makes $4-5 million. It would not be a pay raise from where he is now and unless he lands in one of a few states, he'd have an income tax.

When has a coach ever said they didn't love the school/city that they were at?

I'm not saying he is leaving either. Just saying the coachspeak isn't really reliable in sports. I'm sure Sumlin had great things to say about loving UH and the community when they were there too.

I get that...but he wasn't going to build anything long term at UH and they weren't going to pay him but the $1.5 million or so he was making.

With the meteoric rise of the program under Sumlin and the influx of cash from the SEC Network and a larger stadium...A&M could match most likely offers he would get. Pete Carroll is among the highest paid NFL coaches at $8 million. If the big donors want Sumlin at A&M, they will find the extra $3 million or so to match.

I could be wrong here...but didn't Sumlin receive feeler offers from both USC and the NFL in the off season before signing a long term contract at TAMU?

If so, all the above statements are simply baseless speculation.

That's not to say things might not change in the future, but I would say based on the last years worth of news that any rumors of Sumlin leaving are baseless.

No one is saying Sumlin *is* leaving. Chip Kelly is a good comparison. There were rumors with him and the NFL for a while. Oregon, with all of its Nike money, could match anyone in pay. And he declined the NFL a few times. But ultimately, the itch was still there and he eventually made the jump. We have no idea whether Sumlin is even interested in the NFL - but *if* he is, then contracts and whatever else won't really stop him. Basically, Sumlin has all the power - it's just a matter of where he wants to be. That's true of all great coaches.

You left out the part about Chip Kelly fearing impending doom and show-cause penalty.

    73-3

That just happened. Much of it with 2nd and 3rd stringers.

You beat a bad FCS team, that has only had football for 3 or so years and apparently looks like they only had a QB that had even played football before. Congrats on writing your ticket to the playoffs

Never been on the UT Campus. Had multiple friends graduate from A&M. But I also know there were still a fair number of defensive starters still in at the end of the 3rd so not quite all 2nd and 3rd stringers. And your 2nd string QB's first two possessions looked like crap against a defense that gave up 27 points to Grambling last week. Grambling. I just think celebrating this win and anointing the team as the best around is like Usain Bolt celebrating a win in the special Olympics (no offense intended for those that compete in the special Olympics ). But hey 73 points great job, your still not the highest scoring A&M team this season. A&M Commerce put up 98 on ETBU last week. Guess we can look forward to you playing them in the championship game.

Of course this ignores the fact that Hardrek Walker (a 2nd stringer) started for A&M on the D line...and that at the end of the 3rd, the starters in there was like Garrett (freshmen who need the reps to work out errors they are making).

I just don't get the level of snark in your comments. You either have a problem with the guy who posted or you don't like A&M.

Good win to do what was expected against a bad team .. The turnovers were disappointing but the biggest takeaway for me was the confidence the D has had in 2 games. Dont care who we played, last years D looked lost no matter who we were up against. If we can work out some kinks in the secondary, we can be at least an average defense which should hopefully be enough for the Offense to go out and win the tough games.
