You don't have to **** on every QB not named RGIII and Andrew Luck.

I would have been more excited for the potential Barkley brings as opposed to the potential Mallett brings to the table.

These guys are unproven but the only way they can become proven is to be given a chance. Nick Foles did it, Tom Brady did it, even Aaron Rodgers did it. Not comparing just saying you need a chance to prove your worth before you deem them incapable.

That's why I'm reserving some judgment on Mallett... some.

It was really a joke that I suppose you wouldn't get. When Brett Kollmann was making a case for the Texans to draft Barkley it came off a lot more like he wanted them to draft him because he knew him in high school than for any actual football reason. Since then it's sort of been a joke.

Public perception of Mallett seemed much more damning than Johnny. Mallett is a first round talent that was drafted 3rd. IMO Johnny is a 3rd round talent that was drafted in the first. Johnny list of incidents are documented and with some type of visual evidence. I can't recall Mallett having the same type of visual evidence just alleged accusations. The only we know for sure is he was arrested for public intoxication his sophmore year in college...They called him the next Ryan Leaf out of college

Or I did get it and am hiding that my secret identity is Brett Kollmann.

Kidding, I don't even know who tf Brett Kollmann is. So your joke didn't land, sorry.

Yeah, I forget where I'm posting sometimes, but that's why I explained it. Brett does really good work over at BattleRedBlog usually with film backing up his points that he breaks down frame by frame. He's one of the best things that blog has going for them.

    http://www.battleredblog.com/2014/9/3/6100837/the-film-room-ryan-mallett-houston-we-have-a-monster

This was his piece on Ryan Mallet who he apparently is high on. A word of warning though, don't read it unless you want to be convinced that Ryan Mallett has a chance of becoming something worth a damn. Brett is really convincing even when he's wrong (not saying he is this time, but he has been in the past and it was just as convincing).

Thanks for that not so subtle jab. We get it your the expert because you listen to all these other "experts" talk about who the next Brett Favre will be; even when at that time they had no idea who the hell Brett Favre would be.

Anyway, I remember reading that. Just a letter begging for us to accept Ryan Mallett based on a few preseason games this year. There's no doubt the guy has a rocket arm, but does he have the smarts to make it happen the way the Manning's, Brady's, Brees', and Roders' of the world do, I doubt it. But again I'm leaving that in his hands and the QB guru himself. Hopefully for our sakes he can be, if not, lets go get Winston next year!

That wasn't my intention at all and for the record, I disagree with BK's assessment of Mallett for the exact same reasons you do. I was just trying to give background explaining the original joke about "being Barkley's friend". It's hard to convey tone over this medium so I understand the reason for the misunderstanding, but in this instance that wasn't what was going on.

[rQUOTEr]Houston Texans throwing darts. It's fair to compare what Houston is doing at QB to how Seattle approached the position for years. Carroll and Schneider cycled through a number of moderate-investment options (Matt Hasselbeck, Tarvaris Jackson, Charlie Whitehurst, Matt Flynn) before nailing it with a third-round pick in 2012 (Russell Wilson). Similarly, the Texans invested a little cash in Ryan Fitzpatrick, a fourth-round pick in rookie Tom Savage and a sixth- or seventh-round selection (depending on playing time) in Ryan Mallett, whom they recently acquired from the New England Patriots. This strategy allowed the Seahawks to build up the roster around the quarterback position. The Texans are trying to do the same thing. Now they just have to find the right guy. And while we're there, when I was working last month on my longform quarterback story ("Searching for the next great QB"), I asked O'Brien if there's an essential quality he needs in the position. Here's his answer: "Intelligence. And it takes a while (to know). It's not something that happens overnight. Is a guy coachable? Can you teach him a concept? And can he go out and apply it on the practice field, and then in games? Is he a leader? A guy that's hungry about leading the team and learning the offense and sitting in the front row and taking notes. A good communicator."[/rQUOTEr]

I've been wanting to take the Seattle route all along. No reason to draft a QB 1st overall for the simple fact that you need a QB. Not if you believe there are other elite players out there at impact positions. Proud of the Texans for not reaching.

    Unless Bortles is legit.

I don't know why some people thought we just HAD to find our franchise QB THIS year.

There's a draft full of QBs every year.

"Go get Winston next year" is not on O'B's agenda at least I hope not, if it is then he doesnt want to keep an NFL coaching job.

You don't necessarily have to have the top pick in the draft to get a good QB in the draft.

It's because instead of going out and trying to find a chick at the bar guys nowadays just settle to the p*rn/jerk-off route...people always looking for instant stimulation instead of patience.

This is true and we're not asking Mallett to be an elite qb, just competent. If he can give us that then qb may be way down on the list next year.

Is Matt Barkley's contract the only plus that BOB viewed over Mallet? b/c honestly, what better QB to bring in than someone that's familiar with the coach and the schemes?

Not seeing what Barkley's plus is...

I think it's more of a negative to Mallett if he wanted Barkley over him.

yeah so i'm curious. what was so attractive about barkley than mallet? the obvious reason to me is the contract...

otherwise, mallet has the stronger arm, the necessary football iq, and the familiarity with the coach.

what other plus does barkley have or what negatives does mallet have?
