I like the way he looks off the safety before he throws over the top. Watching the Texans the past few years, there always seemed to be a lack of this kind of game awareness. It doesn't make RM a pro bowler but I think this guy has a high ceiling. Well worth the 6th/7th round pick. Which I fully expect to be a 6th rounder based on his playing time.
Ryan Mallett matured now and knows the NFL game better. Is now time to play him full time, not back up minutes. Play him full games and he'll find his rhythm. Screw Fitzpatrick. Don't forget Ryan Mallett was a beast in college with Arkansas.
That wide receiver is trash. All these gifs of Ryan Mallett over throwing the ball are not his fault. His wide receivers are trash. Andre Johnson would have caught that, even Deandre Hopkins and Davier Posey would caught those.
Doesnt matter how good Mallett is...starting him within the first few games of the season would be stupid. Unless, of course, the plan is to get another top 5 pick and wins dont matter. You only go with Mallett if/when Fitzpatrick is actively losing the Texans games or we are out of the playoff picture.
I think some of you guys worry too much. We cut a crappy backup (Keenum) and brought in a better backup who already knows the offense. I don't think it's any more complicated than that. I really don't think this is the beginning of some grand plan by BOB to install Ryan Mallett as the franchise QB for the next 20 years....
Exactly why we got him for a 7th rounder. If we had got him around draft time it would of cost a 3rd rounder because he would be starting week 1 no doubt about it.
I think the worry is rational. We all know that Fitz can't carry this team. He only scored a TD against a second string defense in the two minute drill. All his passes were close-call interceptions. Like BOB said, he wants the most competitive roster, and I believe that Mallett will prove to be the better competitor. Fitz's demeanor does not resemble a true field general. Harvard graduate my ass. This Texans team is really talented. We have solid receivers and a good defense to help the offense out. I think it's warranted to think that with someone who is more familiar with this offense than the other QBs and a cannon of an arm, we can be potent. By all means, I don't think he'll be the franchise QB for the next 10 years (I would hope so), but I think his addition makes us a competitive team week to week. We have barely seen him take the reigns as a starter, so I'm willing to give him a shot. Dude looks like he wants to win. I think he starts by week 4 or 5.
Exactly! With defensive holding and a corners use of his hands to jam/redirect receivers downfield being more scrutinized than ever, you need a QB that throws it downfield. AJ and Hopkins can easily draw penalties on corners due to their catching ability and physicality. Mallet may not necessarily be any better than Fitzpatrick, but his strengths lend to more opportunities for explosive plays (20+ yards).
Newton has been pretty solid in the pre-season and XSF showed that he's absolutely not a tackle prospect so if he starts, it'll be at one of the guard spots.
Newton can run block. He is Eric Winston in black form. I think he will be much better this year as his injuries have healed up.
that ball was not on target the receiver had to make all kinds of adjustments then like trash he dropped it Rocket River
Texans coach Bill O’Brien said Wednesday that Ryan Mallett will be the Texans’ backup quarterback heading into Sunday’s regular-season opener against the Washington Redskins at NRG Stadium. With veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick locked in as the Texans’ starter, rookie Tom Savage will be the third-stringer against the Redskins. Texans quarterbacks coach George Godsey said Savage’s first-year status and the complexity of NFL offenses were the main factors in the decision to have Mallet follow Fitzpatrick. Two seasons removed from a 2011 run with Mallett in New England, O’Brien said a career backup the Texans traded for Sunday now understands the pro game better, while his accuracy and dedication in the weight room have clearly improved. “The foundation of what he knows is very similar to what we had in the three years in New England,” O’Brien said. “He was drafted in (2011) when I was there. We spent the rookie year together and then I went to Penn State. (In 2012) and ’13, he stayed and was attentive in meetings. It’s obvious since he’s been here. Just the transition of Ryan coming in to this offense, certainly we do things, some things a little bit differently than what they do, based on our personnel. … But the foundation of it is very similar, so he’s been able to pick (it) right up.” http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2014/09/ryan-mallett-named-texans-backup-qb/#26367101=0
On that 3rd and 9 .gif, I have no doubt in my mind that Schaub would have checked down to the wide open running back who would have been forced to go out of bounds one yard short due to momentum. Either way, I hope Mallett can push for the starting job due to success and talent rather than Fitzpatrick's failings.
If OB was THAT high on Mallett, we probably would've paid the higher asking price to get him in earlier so he'd have a legit shot to win the job right out of the gate. The fact that we waited so long and gave up so little tells me that he's not viewed by the organization as the future franchise QB. He might be given that opportunity if Fitz and the Texans eliminate themselves from contention, but by no mean are the Texans banking on that to happen.
Brown, Jones, Myers, Brooks, Newton Su'a-Filo is the backup for both guards. Jones is backup for Myers, Clabo and Jeff Adams (just claimed off waivers) are the backup tackles.
