What Do Douglas-Roberts and Udoh Bring to the Clippers?

    Dennis Rogers

The Clippers signed guard Chris Douglas-Roberts and forward/center Ekpe Udoh today. Both players give added flexibility and depth in two of the most important areas for the team, the wing and big man positions.

As Doc Rivers said today, “Chris and Ekpe are two versatile players who bring depth and a strong presence to our team.”

Douglas-Roberts comes to the Clippers after a successful stint in Charlotte in 2013-14 with averages of 6.9 points and 2.4 rebounds in about 20 minutes a game. CDR as Chris Douglas-Roberts is referred to as, is known as a slasher who has the ability to score, defend and play multiple positions. To dig deeper into his significance on the Bobcats last season, see the bullet points below.

CDR •Averaged 10.3 points and 3.8 rebounds as a starter last season (eight games). Connected on 52% of his three-pointers (15-29) during that time.
•Played 20+ minutes 29 times during the 2013-14 season, scoring in double figures 13 times and averaging 10.1 points.
•Played significant minutes in the last 29 games of the season for Charlotte, helping the Bobcats finish out with a 20-9 mark and a playoff berth.
•In the final two playoff games against the Miami Heat, he averaged 15.5 points on 82 percent shooting.
•CDR was an important piece for the Bobcats late in games highlighted by his buzzer beater to beat the Hawks on April 14. It was often CDR and not the starter, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist who played in the fourth quarter of games late in the season.

Udoh comes to the Clippers after spending last season in Milwaukee where he averaged 3.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks over 42 games (14 starts). Udoh has always been a very intelligent big man with a defensive skillset. His best attribute is his ability to make defenders alter their shots. The Clippers will look for the Oklahoma City native to help anchor their second-team and give added depth to the power forward and center positions. The additions of Spencer Hawes and Udoh along with the re-signing of Glen Davis give the Clippers one of the deeper big man rotations in the league backing up Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. A few bullet points below go into detail about what Udoh brings to the team.
    •He has a 7’4 ½ wingspan!
•He was nicknamed “The Nightmare” in college due to his shot-blocking prowess. His junior season at Baylor, he blocked 133 shots (3.7 per game), a Baylor and Big 12 record.
•Last season, Udoh played limited minutes (19.1 minutes per game), but still collected 14 games of at least five rebounds and 10 games of at least two blocks.
•He is a solid free throw shooter, averaging 72 percent for his career.

Clippers have a little bit of a whole at the 3 spot, but besides that, the team is rock solid.

    Paul, Livingston, Famar
    Reddick, Crawford, Wilcox
    Barnes
    Griffin, Davis, Udoh
    Jordan, Hawes

Douglas-Roberts, Turkoglu, Bullock will have to fight for and split minutes for the backup SF spot...unless maybe Reddick slides over to the 3 and they cut the rotation down to 9 players.

This added nothing to their depth. Training camp fodder.

The Clippers biggest issues last year was lane protection depth behind Deandre and wing defense. Udoh is a rim protector and CDR is a wing defender. Not sure why these moves don't add anything to their depth in your opinion. Sure, they literally spent minumum contracts on these two, but they got a lot of bang for the buck in my opinion.

Udoh is a great signing. Such an upgrade over Hollins and Big Baby

The Clippers really needed to add some bench bigs this offseason and went out and got Spencer Hawes at a decent price, they have really improved this offseason.

**** my bad! got my west cost teams mixed, warriors signed Livingston. Seeing the team without Livingston though has me wondering exactly what they did this off season.

So they dumped Dudley(PLUS a 1st) and skipped on re-signing Collison... for money? Aren't they in LA? Are they nothing like the Lakers when it comes to paying $ or what? OP srs question, why not just have kept Dudley, used MLE on Hawes, re-sign Collison, and still have signed all the vet min players like Davis, Famar, Udoh?

    PG: Paul, Collison, Famar
    SG: Reddick, Crawford, Wilcox
    SF: Barnes, Dudley
    PF: Griffin, Davis, Udoh
    C : Jordan, Hawes

    Inactive: Bullock, Turkoglu + keep 2015 1st

Would have been much better for the team, you guys basically replaced MLE caliber players that would have contributed very nicely for the team for vet min scrap players, leaving wholes at the backup PG and SF.

DID THE CLIPPERS NOT HAVE COLLISION LAST YEAR??? Am I going nuts??

Nope just checked, Collison was with the Clippers last year. Phew, couldn't take to f'ups on the same page.

What's the confusion? Did they not have bird rights? Probably not right?

I see they didn't have bird rights, they could have signed him with the MLE, and s&t for Hawes with their 2015 1st, Bullock, Wilcox and Dudley though.

I wonder what Morey would do if he ran the Clippers... shed salaries to build around Griffin/CP3 or continue to build to win.

CDR was terrible in the playoffs, 15.5 pts for the last 2 games be damned and Udoh is not that good so they can make people believe these are great signings but they are just meh..however, I would've personally loved Udoh over freaking Adrien and Dorsey.

Clippers just sign anybody for the sake of signing anybody. Who are they ever not interested in?

CDR will see all his minutes at SF, which is good for them as it is their weakest position. That said i just dont believe in Chris Paul any more.

Him trying to flop from beyond half court and letting Westbrook steal the ball thus choking away what would have been a 3-2 advantage going home is the worst thing i have seen a superstar do in recent histoy.
