I definitely get the feeling the Texans are going to do their best to throw him out there as early as they can. They know exactly what Fitzpatrick's ceiling is. What I would not like to see is the Texans winning the first few games (which is the "easy" part of the schedule) by luck with sub-par QB play and trusting Fitzpatrick for the rest of the season. That's exactly how it would have played out with Kubiak but I have a feeling that's not how B'Ob rolls.
If the Texans go 3-2 or better in the first 5 weeks, you probably won't see Mallet much at all this year because they'll constantly be hovering around .500. Just close enough to think they have a playoff shot. Not going to want Mallet to jeopardize that.
But my caveat was "with subpar QB play". You don't think they'd want to address bad QB play even if they're winning? That's Kubiak-mentality.
Lets say we hoover around .500 and we don't get to see what Mallet has this year. Being that he is a free agent, do we sign him to a new contract without really seeing what he can do or let him walk?
My feeling is that Fitzpatrick is going to get injured during the season, and Ryan will have a chance to play some games. Ryan may be able to play well to be a stater, or he would be gone next year if he can not perform good enough. Luckily, Kubiak was gone, so I have a high expectation for this team with B'Ob.
I have Peyton Manning as my number one, it was an auction draft and i didn't have any funds left for QBs after i got the best player in fantasy... and when you have to start 2 QBs you are forced to choose between guys like Fitzpatrick and Joe Flacco. Fitzpatrick was actually a good fantasy QB last year when he was the starter, and I have no faith in Joe Flacco and Kubes.
out of bounds. But you're right, at least it got there versus being intercepted...that's one positive way to spin it. Look, I hope the guy becomes a star so the texans can win, but that doesn't mean I have to be delusional about it.
Ah, gotcha, auction leagues cause some funny decisions to be made. I'd have probably gone with Flacco only because he's more likely to start all 16, but given the circumstances it is understandable.
See thats the thing I have Flacco for the scenario in which Fitz gets the boot, but I'm pretty confident in him to be able to put up about 10 points
I'd be more worried if the Texans go with Mallett and the defense gets us into the playoffs, we'd almost certainly stick with him long term and that's how teams end up giving big contracts to the Fitz's and Sanchez's of the world.
Saw this interesting breakdown, good read http://www.battleredblog.com/2014/9/3/6100837/the-film-room-ryan-mallett-houston-we-have-a-monster
