Schaub accomplished more with Atlanta than Mallet has with New England.

    lol

Worth the risk of a 7th round pick though. The only risk is if Mallet does nothing and Case somehow starts playing very well for another team. Unlikely but it has happened before.

They do not have all of their eggs in the Mallett/Savage basket. They have them in the Fitzpatrick/Mallett basket for the season. After having a full year to evaluate Mallett and Savage's development he'll make a decision at the end of the season on whether they need to target someone in the draft. He's made very little investment in either guy so in reality neither is likely to be the starter next season.

At 7:55 for a recent preseason game.

I think you're over looking what type of investments have to be made on the defensive side of the ball... How many of JJ's, JD's, Cushing's years do you think they are willing to waste...??? And there is no guarantee that they can find a quarterback who is better in next year's draft and even if they do he may not be ready right away. That along with the fact the owner doesn't believe the Texans need a high calibre quarterback to win a super bowl.

Both Matt McGloin and Thad Lewis had somewhat success on the NFL level last season and O'Brien worked with both of them in college. He has the quarterback "guru" tag so Mallet or Savage should be expected to be "the guy". He could have had any quarterback he wanted out of the draft and he picked Savage and than traded for Mallet... These aren't "just one year evaluation" moves IMO...

It seems like some of you are making excuses for Bobby O'Brien already...

True, and this is a good thing. Mallett is very smart. His parents are teachers. You just have to get over his Arkansas dialect.

I for one am excited about Mallet in this system with OB and Godsey coaching him. Mallet hasn't had a chance to play, but he's had plenty of time to watch, listen and learn. Hopefully, he's matured and is ready to be a starting QB. I wish we would have had one PS game with him.

Our bye isn't until after the 6th game. I'll be surprised if Mallet isn't ready before then. If Fitz struggles, I think OB will give Mallet a chance. If nothing else, the weakest position on our team, just got a lot more interesting.

He played at Texas HS, in Texarkana, TX. Isn't that a Texas dialect?

Looks good in that short clip. At Arkansas he was very impressive. Picked SEC defenses apart. I am not buying that he is so "horrible." Let's give him a shot. OBrien got who he wanted all along. He and Mallet are likely pumped. Let's see what they can do. Surely you knew that the Texans weren't going anywhere with Fitzpatrick. It would not shock me if Mallet started on Sunday. But it will really shock me if he isn't starting by the Dallas game.

That's not the part that was wrong with that statement. He's probably the first person to ever call Mallett "smart". Ever.

The mistaking an extreme northeast Texas accent as an Arkansas accent is something I can look past, thinking a moron like Mallett is "smart" I cannot.

These are evaluation moves. If it was more they would have signed Mallett to a contract extension like they did with Schaub when they traded for him. They aren't married to either guy.

Football teams have these things called draft boards where they slot players. If they had Bridgewater at #17 value they would have taken him at #33. If they had Garrapalo valued at #45 they would have taken them at #66. We don't know where the Texans had these guy valued but they didn't reach for any of them. Just because they didn't draft them it doesn't mean they didn't like them. Perhaps they made a poor decision in not trading up to get any of them though and now they are stuck in their current position.

Yes he has had drug/alcohol problems in college and was still successful. But has kept his nose clean in the pros. You should check out Mallett dissecting defenses with Gruden on youtube. It may give you a different perspective on Mallett's football IQ. But I doubt that happens., your mind has been made up for months.

A 6th for Mallett is a good deal whether it works out or not. I will trust BOB/Godsey's eval of Mallett over yours. After all they woked with him for yrs. How well do you know Mallett?

Saw him play MSU in Starkville. He definitely has a cannon for an arm.

Ryan Mallett scored a 26 on the Wonderlic so that would put him towards the bottom in NFL QB ranking of intelligence. However it's not so bad that you would worry about him being able to grasp a NFL playbook, and it's only 2 points behind Peyton Manning.

ffseason, so why not look at who's got the smartest QBs.
    Blaine Gabbert - 42
    Alex Smith - 40
    Eli Manning - 39
    Matt Flynn - 38
    Colin Kaepernick - 38
    Matt Stafford - 38
    Andrew Luck - 37
    Tony Romo - 37
    Sam Bradford - 36
    Christian Ponder - 35
    Aaron Rodgers - 35
    Ryan Tannehill - 34
    Tom Brady - 33
    Matt Ryan - 32
    Matt Schaub - 31
    Phillip Rivers - 30
    Andy Dalton - 29
    Nick Foles - 29
    Drew Brees - 28
    Kevin Kolb/ EJ Manuel - 28
    Peyton Manning - 28
    Mark Sanchez - 28
    Russell Wilson - 28
    Joe Flacco - 27
    Josh Freeman - 27
    Brandon Weeden - 27
    Jay Cutler - 26
    Carson Palmer - 26
    Ben Roethlisberger - 25
    RGIII - 24

I never said that a high wonderlic score equaled success in the NFL, all I said was that Mallett is dumb as a bag of hammers so no one should describe him as being "smart"

All of that is meaningless when O'Brien opened up his mouth and said "there's not much separation between the quarterbacks" before the draft... He let his mouth write that check.
It's just ironic he had to turn around and trade for a quarterback who got beat out by one of the quarterbacks out of this draft and the quarterback he drafted can't even be the QB2.
