"Yea, let's teach our 9 year old daughter to operate a fully automatic weapon... That's a great idea."

I bet at that point in time the parents didn't consider that an idiot conversation.

Makes me recall the time I was on a hunting trip with my friend and his family. He was around ten years old. He shot a 12 gauge shot gun for the first time. It ended up kicking back and nailing him in the face. He was a bloody mess.

On another trip with a different friend and family, some family adult friend was giving me "instruction" on how to shoot a 30-06 rifle. He almost blew my head off in the process as he was holding the rifle with one hand and I guess he pulled the trigger. The rifle went off. Luckily, it was pointed more up than at my head. Every one around him was just shaking their head at how he was supposedly giving me instruction and handling the gun in an unsafe manner.

You could never get me to agree with handing an Uzi to a nine year old and letting them attempt to shoot it. That's just dumb.

I am not a gun fan.

I am definitely not a fan of 9 year olds with guns.

I am MOST DEFINITELY not a fan of parents trying to teach their 9 year old how to use an Uzi.

All that said... wtf was the instructor doing standing just next to her like that. It seems incredibly dumb. I kept expecting him to move behind her. Is it common practice for an instructor to stand to your side at a gun lesson?

One of the problems is that we see so many guns in movies that never kick. The hero fires off round after round and his hand never moves. You start to think that's how it always is and then when you fire a real gun, you're reminded that that little thing in your hand has to propel that bullet at an incredibly high speed.

Exactly as it should be.... stupid parents, stupid instructor, poor girl.

when you teach your kids to drive you don't start them out in an indy car because.... someone might get hurt.... someone might die.

In a rush to show just how safe guns are, this idiot got killed, guns aren't safe, guns are dangerous and should be handled by experienced people, especially in the full auto variety.

    I don't think there's much kick-back on a flame thrower. You're being illogical.

I have no problem with a 9 year old having exposure to guns with a properly certified expert. Indeed, I will have my son by 6-7 taught the proper way to handle and proper gun safety.

Having said that, a 9 year old does not need to be shooting an UZI and I do not know why the instructer was positioned where he was.

    It was a terrible accident.

Reminds me of the video where the cop says, in front of a classroom full of kids, that he is the only person in the room qualified to handle his firearm, then shoots himself in the leg. HI-LARIOUS!

It's good that the parents are teaching their child to respect guns from such a young age. I'm sure she will cherish the memory and be thankful that her parents were so forward thinking. The only thing that is messed up about this situation is that the range doesn't allow children under 8 to exercise their 2nd Amendment Rights. I mean, what part of "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" do they not understand?

Good point. A 9 year old with a gun itself isn't that bad in the proper context - eg, learning how to properly respect, use a firearm, that is age appropriate.

Wow. Pretty impressive how calm he stayed, and how he continued his message to those kids.

Would have been even more impressive if he had cleared his weapon before putting a finger on the trigger.

i'm pretty sure i shot a gun at that age, grandad (and mom) took me out in the woods and we destroyed some cans, although what i remember most was the kick from the shotgun; can't remember the gauge.

and i've occasionally thought about taking my daughter to a professional range to learn how to handle and shoot a handgun. i will never have one in my house, nor any other gun for that matter, but i think it's important on some level she be introduced to them and understand how they're meant to be used. plus, i think it would good for her self confidence.

that said, what the hell were the adults involved thinking? an Uzi? my god.

This was supposed to be dripping with sarcasm. It would actually have been the minimum standard of safety I would expect from someone entering a classroom full of children with a loaded weapon.

Crazy, my uncle killed his brother accidentally while they were playing cowboys and Indians when they were 7 and 5 and he was messed up his entire life because of it... Kids should not have access to firearms, when will people get this?

a 9 year old is too young to be learning how to use a firearm. Teaching proper gun safety is okay, but using it?

I don't think under any circumstance a 9 year old should be at target practice trying to get a headshot.
