I don't know where to put this as this transcends all sports. What sports names ever? Here's my list:

    Pelicans
    Flyers
    Phillies
    Sounders
Golden State - While "Warriors" is cool, "Golden State" still sounds a bit corny, even if we've all pretty much gotten used to it.

Anything that doesn't end with an S (Red Sox and White Sox excepted). Magic, Heat, jazz, Avalanche, Dynamo, Thunder, a number of stupid soccer names, and of course, Mavericks.

New England... I mean... why not "Really Way Too Far South of Boston"?

Utah Jazz (bu their logo is a mountain), Los Angeles Lakers (but there are probably no major lakes in L.A.)... Washington Wizards? What, does Harry Potter live there?

BEST: Pacers, Astros, Rockets, Heat, Suns... almost anything related to heat or racing or new technology.

Dallas Cowboys. They haven't played in Dallas since... ever? When I was growing up it was Irving.

In 1978, San Diego welcomed the relocation of the Buffalo Braves’ franchise because the city had lost their Rockets to Houston seven years earlier. San Diego team officials didn’t think Braves was a representative nickname for the club.

A contest decided on Clippers because the city was known for the great sailing ships that passed through San Diego Bay. When the Clippers moved to Los Angeles in 1984, they kept their nickname.

This is far and away the worst to me. Chosen because there was a popular movie featuring velociraptors at the time. Matched only in crappiness by their dino-studded jerseys. Trashboat.
