Sigh... Some of y'all could suck the life out of an orgy on a private beach in the Caribean with no one but yourself and perfect ten models. "If this is the public's idea of prestine beaches and beautiful women..."

That's exactly what was going to happen after the Leno debacle, or if the Leno debacle had never happened and O'Brien had just been left to do his show. Letterman's been a mature/declining host for the last five years and ABC will never cede the cache or history of Nightline to give Kimmel the boost and continuity from prime-time programming, so NBC's ratings were going to rise over the last five years whomever was in that slot. Zucker micromanaged a twenty-year Emmy factory into mediocrity.

Was super critical of Fallon when he first started because the show was horrible. He has improved a lot and now I enjoy watching some of his YouTube clips. Letterman is old news. Kimmel comes off as a dick most of the time. Fallon is the most decent host.

Fallon is entirely scripted and derivative of other material. Which is fine, but shows his limitations.

Contrast to Ferguson, who just ad libs the whole time and literally rips up his question card when the guest comes on.

this is spot on. fallons writers know exactly what works, its about the 2-3 skits that can get replayed over and over on youtube. the lip sync battles as an example.

hes not that great an interviewer and the monologues are atrocious.

letterman has always been my fav but i don't think people like how bitter and sarcastic he can be.

hopefully colbert can come in and shake things up a bit.

Really? You really always knew? Fair enough. To me, he came off as a mediocre, dime a dozen SNL jabroni that laughed during skits for no reason.

I'm not a huge fan of any of the late night shows (including The Daily Show) in the sense that I sit down and watch them start to finish. But I think that's partly due to the format. My TV's on a lot, but it's getting rare for me to sit down and actually watch a show at its specified airtime. I like Ferguson the best. Fallon isn't very funny to me, but I give him props for devoting some time to video games during his show.

I suspect most under-30 young people don't watch a whole lot of broadcast or cable TV, period...unless it's live sports. It's more about Netflix streaming, Youtube, etc. for them. Many of them can quickly find stuff on Youtube or Vine that is far funnier than any of the late-night shows. Times have changed and the older models of entertainment delivery are growing obsolete. Like you said, why waste time watching the whole show when they can quickly watch only the good parts on YT or other social media.

    Nielsen is an obsolete metric.

    From what I remember:

Obrien did not get good numbers out of the gate which was why NBC panicked and brought Leno back (though the prime time leno show did not help at all).

I couldn't stand Fallon on SNL. Never cared for him in anything really.

But I LOVE his show on NBC.

    I've been discovered, hide!

Say something normal. Nerd misunderstands. Nerd responds with something about quantum physics. Laugh track.

Doesn't do anything for me, if it does for you great. Jim Parsons in particular grates on my nerves for whatever reason, which doesn't help. Same goes for Sheen.

I've never gotten the ratings behind either TBBT or Two & A Half Men, largely for the reasons Mr Brightside brought up... I don't know anyone that watches them (under 30 or not).

Fallon has his bits, but it's not worth watching his entire show as others have alluded to. I'm about at the point with all late night shows though where unless they have a guest I really want to see (or I'm particularly bored), I'm not going to watch and even then I'm just going to record and fast forward to the guest's segment.

That describes Jay Leno and David Letterman, not sure how it describes Jimmy Fallon. He's mostly just about having fun at his job, people enjoy that. I think late night shows have been dying pretty hard for the last decade or so, Jimmy Fallon seems to be revitalizing it to some extent, modernizing it more than anyone else. Sure he sucked on snl, but this job isn't about staying in character, it just having fun and entertaining people

First I need to pretend that considering anything about late night TV is worth a moment of my time.

    I'm done. It's not.

Late night shows have always struggled with demographics as you have to appeal such a wide range of people. The Letterman and Leno shows were boring.

I'll agree that Fallon's show is much funnier than those shows but the credit mostly goes to the writers. The material is much funnier than Fallon himself.

I'm a huge Jimmy Fallon fan and my family especially enjoys his spoofs of hit shows such as "Downton Sixbey", "Joking Bad", "Jersey Floor", etc. Also, Higgins is the man!

And this is coming from a guy who enjoys high-brow humor. His show just clicks with me most of the time, despite my pre-conceived notions.

There are too many factors influencing social media, vs a Nielsen box.

    1) Tweeting about it even though you didn't watch it (but you are a fan of the show)

    2) Tweeting about it because you hate the show

    3) Tweeting about it even if you've never even heard of the show

    and so on.

It's just easier to judge a Nielsen box and the number of people that watched online through Hulu, etc.

Isn't that snl in a nutshell? One or two good skits, weekend update, then rest filler?
