We're big time now, folks.
First football game of the season tomorrow on ESPN. The regular ESPN, not any of the offshoots. I am cautiously optimistic. Have no idea what to expect with a new coach playing his first game against the #1 FCS team in the country. But Keeler has been around the block a few times. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/XvtvSrv7qkc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Has a starting QB been named? Last I heard it was between Jared Johnson and Don King III and John Roderique, a redshirt freshman. I was surprised to hear Cole Martin wasn't up for the starting spot. I thought he was supposed to be good. ::EDIT:: NVM on the starter. It will be Jared Johnson: Also, new away jersey for Saturday: Spoiler
I had no idea we got Jalen Overstreet from UT. I feel better about the RB depth. SHSU faces rebuilding campaign
As someone who spent 7 years in the synthetic turf industry, I apologize for this field. 21-21 at the half. We got off to a bit of a slow start but ran off some big plays to score 3 td. I'm not getting the hype of the EWU qb. He couldn't hit the ocean from the beach. It's their RB that is keeping them in this game. Johnson has been ok so far. Had a great run to score a td. He needs to do better with the long ball as he's missed wide open wr's. Defense is doing ok. They're getting in the backfield but missing a lot of tackles and have been lucky the EWU qb has been so bad.
If you take out the penalties, that was a great game all things considered. I'm more optimistic after this game than I was before it.
Same here. I'm excited about Johnson. He was recruited by Oregon and Baylor. He's got the wheels (as evidenced on his long td run) and he has a cannon for an arm. I think as the season progresses and he gets more in tuned with his wr's, this is going to be a high powered team. Still concerned about the D. EWUs wr's were open all day. The safety were nonexistent.
Disappointed in our defense (as usual) but encouraged by Keeler and the offense. Tough to watch this game in the midst of hosting a 3rd birthday party for my boys...but felt pretty good about where we are after it was over. Still not sure why we kept our Defensive Coordinator. Our D looks just as susceptible to the big play as they have in the last 2 seasons. It's like watching an arena football game when we're on defense...
At some point, someone is going to have the offensive game plan against us that is like my old backyard games. "Just go long." It was amazing how open the EWU WR's were on nearly every play they went vertical. If the EWU QB had any deep ball accuracy, the loss would have been much much worse.
Game against LSU will be on the SEC Network main channel. The A&M/Lamar game will be on the alternate channel. This ain't gonna be pretty but the good news is that 2 of the last 3 SHSU games have been on national TV. Not bad for an FCS school located in Texas.
Well, that wasn't fun. Lucky for me I couldn't watch the game live and my DVR didn't record it for some reason. Maybe it's like a TiVo and knew I wouldn't want to watch it so it deleted it on it's own? There's a rumor going around KatFans that our AD and coach are already having problems. Apparently the AD said something to the effect of "I shouldn't have scheduled this game, we're not good enough to play a team of this caliber" and said it in front of the players/coaches after the game. Also the AD went and shook Les Miles' hand after the game before Keeler could get to him. Keeler isn't happy about either and let him know about it. And players have referenced the AD's comments on twitter.
That's not good stuff. I don't mind these games. We've given Baylor and A&M a good fight in the past couple of years. This team isn't as good as those were. I was happy we kept it under 70. There was a drive in the 1st quarter. We were down 13-0 at the time and were in field goal range. Keeler went for it on 4th for some reason. I would have taken the points and kicked off. Instead, LSU went right down and scored. Seemed like the fight was gone from the players after that. Scoring would have been somewhat uplifting, even if it was just a fg.
I'm assuming you aren't familiar with LSU. They never score 70... by design. Les Miles is known for running the ball and calling very basic plays to try to run the clock when they build a lead and play against teams like SHSU. I believe LSU only threw 3 passes in the entire second half. If they wanted to, they could have easily scored 70. But LSU doesn't keep on the gas and throw the ball constantly until the game is over like some other teams who run spread uptempo offenses.
They have mercy on teams like SHSU when they build a nice lead. Other teams like Baylor will keep throwing the ball until the game is over and that's how they put up so many points.
In theory, yes, since they play D-II. But they are a very good D-II team, as they are ranked #2 in the polls. Still, disappointing effort.
There's a good ol' message board meltdown going on over at KatFans.com. At least some of the conversation over there has made me laugh, which is the only thing that has kept me from crying.
