How do you feel about the offense next year and the defense? Will net rating improve?

Basically, net rating is the difference between how many points a team scores and how many points it gives up.

So for example, the Rockets' improvement on defense could be greater than the loss of offense, thus meaning the team got better.

So do you see that being the case? How much does the offense improve or not and how much does the defense improve or not?

Personally, I think the offense will be very much the same. The Rockets' style of play generates a lot of points and makes it easier for lesser players to score. The Rockets will have better shooters from off the bench which will help, too.

Defensively, the Rockets will definitely improve. Losing Asik sucks, but his 13 minutes per game won't have a big impact in terms of what was lost. Ariza will give much needed wing defense, which was really the biggest need defensively. Add in Kostas off the bench who is known to play good defense, and an energy guy like Adrien to come off the bench like the PF version of Beverley to keep the intensity up, and the defense will be much improved.

Overall, I think this team is a bit better than last year, not even including any individual improvements from players like Harden, Jones, Motiejunas, Beverley, Daniels, etc.

I think this is more a question of Injuires.

If we can stay healthy I don't see why both don't improve

This is how I see it.

I think we added better 3 point shooters which should offset the loss in other areas of offense.

Defense, obviously should improve with who we let go and who we brought in.

I actually think we should end up in the highly coveted group of team that are both top 10 in offensive and defensive efficiency. The best teams are just about always in this group and 1 from that group seems to always win the title. I don't think we will be that team, but my feeling is we will be the lower end of that top group.

Well how come many are so pessimistic about this season and say the Rockets got worse?

The Rockets were like the 6th best team in the NBA last year. Any improvement on that is great.

We lost depth. Our better or worse performance will be depending on the growth of young players and team chemistry, which are both a big question mark as for now.

The thought of no Howard in the paint for a duration of one full period scares me. Even if we assume he's healthy the whole season, what happens to the games where he gets in foul trouble...

When Asik was injured and there was a collective effort at back up center, the team did fine. Their winning percentage was virtually the same as when Asik was healthy.

Last year before the season, I was pretty vocal about how 48 minutes of elite rim protection was going to be huge. And although it gave me comfort knowing a great center would be on the floor at all times, the fact is that it didn't matter nearly as much as I thought it would.

    -------------

    2013-14
    PF: 107.7
    PA: 103.1
    Net: +4.6

    2014-15
    PF: 105.2
    PA: 99.5
    Net: +5.7

Last year, the gap between the 3rd best net rating (OKC +6.3) and the 4th best (GSW/MIA +4.8) was pretty defined. With our moves, I don't expect us to jump into the top 3 tier, but definitely still remain at the top of the remaining teams (while improving). I feel like a PA of 99.5 is attainable because that is around what GSW, WAS and OKC were able to reach with their lineups.

What bothers me about this team is that we do great during the season but we have no idea what to do during the playoffs. I feel like this is where JVG and Adelman really had issues with Morey. He is always looking at steps ahead when we really should be winning right now. There is some interesting method to his madness but with a prime Dwight and a budding Harden there is no reason why we can't be in the finals. Unless everyone of players off the bench somehow turn into the greatest role players ever we are going to have a very rough season. The net ratings for the playoffs are really what concern me.

I see the Rockets getting worse on offense and defense. A lot will depend on how all our young players play. We lost three of our top seven players, and replaced them with Ariza and a bunch of rookies and D-League players.

I think losing Asik is a big blow, and we will notice it every time Dwight goes to the bench. We will need our young players to step up in a hurry to replace what Lin and Parsons gave us. I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but this could be a tough year, with the Rockets missing the playoffs. Harden and Howard will have to stay healthy, and several new contributors will have to emerge for the Rockets to even match what they did last year.

When Omer Asik missed 34 games this past season... did it affect the team at all?

The answer is that it really didn't. The Rockets' winning percentage was almost identical to what it was when Asik played.

The fact is, he really just didn't have a big impact like we all thought it would in a back-up role.

I was very vocal before last season that 48 minutes of elite rim protection would be huge. But in reality, Asik's minutes had very little impact.

Harden has been looking like the best perimeter defender on Team USA. I don't expect him to be as great in regular season, but I can see him being at least average.

If Terrence Jones can improve his rebounding, this team has potential to be a top 5 defense.

The offense seems to be a concern which is something I would never have thought to say.

There were times when Harden and Dwight are off, Parsons would get hot. What happens this year when Harden and Dwight are off? Ariza is not as good offensively as Parsons. So it's going to have to be Terrence Jones who has to step up

The bench looks to have some solid defenders on it in Adrien, Dmo, Dorsey, and I've read some good things on Kostas. None of these players though are Asik level help defender though .But the offense NEEDS Isiaah Canaan to be the main sparkplug.
