When will everyone be referred to as Americans? Why do we still have to put what race we are on job applications?

    Agreed!

Example: The American population is made up of 13% Americans.

Seriously, it's just the most politically correct way to refer to Americans who happen to be black. Are you trying to infer that the term "African Americans" isn't even politically correct?

They are the descendants enslaved africans who were brought to what would become the United States against their will. These individuals are also citizens of the United States of America.

Due to the fact that a concerted effort was made to disconnect their ancestors from their native lands, languages, religions and traditions combined with the fact that the majority of African nations were not in existence at the time of their ancestors capture it is difficult to say with 100% certainty which country their ancestors came from (in most cases ethnicity can be identified...but this doesn't always account for population movement). Therefore they are called "African-Americans" to respect the fact that their ancestors were not american and the majority of them had no real desire to leave their homelands in such a manner.

Why is this a problem for you? I don't understand why you are even making a thread about this. Why are lighter skinned Americans still called "Caucasian"?

With gov't jobs it's called affirmative action. It's all about the stats.

Science has shown that we all derived from the Great Rift Valley in Africa and then spread east. Maybe one day we can all be referred to as just "people."

Actually, you don't HAVE to disclose that info on job applications. You can always choose to not identify.

its dumb. they should be called black people, not african american.

not all black people you see are from america. in my neighborhood, there are many black people who are not american citizens. they come from africa and drive taxi cabs. they speak english clearly and differently than american black people. they dress better and have darker skins with very white teeth (no metal). they also don't take govt handouts and are very hard working and respectful.

I think the term "African American" rose as a politically correct alternative when some started thinking of "black" as an offensive term. I'm not sure that's the case anymore. "Black" seems to be acceptable again.

And "African American" is not always the best descriptive word. I remember that when Obama was running for president, there were at least several black commentators (I specifically remember Stanley Crouch) saying that he wasn't African American because that term was reserved for descendents of African slaves. It doesn't refer to post slavery African immigrants or their descendents. And I've heard people talk about the term "black" in the same way. And if you believe that about both terms, then I'm not sure what you'd call a lot of black people.

I think it's all crap. Just simplify it. I'm white. It doesn't matter where I was born, where or when my parents or grandparents were born, or what country I'm a citizen of. I'm still white. Should be the same for black people.

Who cares? You're the same type people whining about Italians and Irish and Germans a hundred years ago.

At least blacks are considered "American".

Dunno how may times I've had stupid ass ppl treat me like I don't speak English.

Most of those racial checkboxes on application forms are to benefit non-Asian minoritites btw.

It's important to know that nobody "applies" for affirmative action. Even if you do not check your race or gender on the application, after you are hired or accepted the institution/business that brought you on will report your race or gender to the federal government for federal funding. Therefore, not checking the block on your race is really irrelevant...unless you want the whole feel good "I didn't ask for help" thing.

At the time of the Civil War there were a good many African Nationals living in the States. Estimates are as high as 200,000 most coming to North America through the Port of New Orleans.

You made me run a Google search, Jay. Granted, it's welfare.

    Welfare Demographics as of 7/8/14

Percent of recipients who are white 38.8 % [63.7% of the population]
Percent of recipients who are black 39.8 % [14.1% of the population]
Percent of recipients who are Hispanic15.7 % [17% of the population]
Percent of recipients who are Asian 2.4 %
Percent of recipients who are Other 3.3 %

    http://www.statisticbrain.com/welfare-statistics/

That's $131 billion spent. I think corporate welfare costs us all more.
