Because the highlight reels I've made over the last two seasons of how Rockets assignees perform in the D-League have gone done well (or so it seems), I thought some of you might be interested in the scouting reports I put together on Robert Covington and Troy Daniels over on Ridiculous Upside.

I think you should move this to the GARM.

Nice job (as always), Crabdribbles! I always appreciate your breakdowns of D-League games and the prospects playing there.

(One minor nit: Covington is now in the second year of a THREE year deal.)

Despite Covington's poor play in Summer League, I definitely like his game. He has a great NBA body with his length and can shoot it around Chandler Parsons' clip from three. He could be the answer we were looking for with the Jordan Hamilton trade. (And athletic 3&D guy)

Problem for Covington is, unless Kostas gets moved, I think most of the minutes he would've had will go to him.

Excellent work. You won't be covering the NBADL for long.

Incredible write ups. Best i've seen in a long time

I'd love to see you do some player profiles for us on CFans
Hopefully you and Clutch can line something up, if it isn't too much trouble

Covington's size and three point shot remind me of Big Shot Rob.

the rest of his game, not so much.

can he throw a good entry pass into the post?

Thanks for the kind words, everyone! They're greatly appreciated.

I plan on putting one together on Isaiah Canaan this weekend/next week, so I'll share that one as well when I'm done with it.

My theory: the 2 were coached by a specialist coach for the purpose of playing together in the NBA. Neither guy dribbled more than a few times in live action and never took a close shot. The first rule. Do not turn the ball over. Second rule, not give up a wide open 3s or layups 3rd rule. Always box out. Don't foul attempting a steal or block.

Robert ran the same plays 10 times a game all season, all jumpshots. Daniels was told to shoot 3s, almost nothing but. Out of 16 a game, 2.5 were 3s. Defenders knew what they were going to do, but made it anyway. I doubt D-League games are analyzed for player shot celectuon, if a player only goes left, etc. 10 teams to practice the same shots against. The defenders would catch on, but during the game, not before.

Neither guy was drafted, but almost definitely had considerable ability in college. Is it better to have a kid fresh from college wet the bench. Or a 1-2 trick money you can have trained and practice against 2nd class NBA talent? Daniels took that same 3 probably twice a game in real action against defenders who knew he was going to shoot from 3. If

    Great reads. Thanks for posting!

I've kind of given up on Covington for now, but I'm ultra excited about Daniels this season. I don't see why he can't give us around 9-12 points per game.

You've only given up on Covington because he had a bad summer. If Daniels played this summer and sucked I wonder if your opinion would have changed on him too. Summer League means nothing, Covington can still turn out to be another gem Morey found in the alley behind the local Dennys.

I think Covington could be a good fit. Only thing I worry about is that he needs a lot of shots to get going. As I said:

That could just be a matter of adjusting to a smaller role, though, and if that's the case, he could be a nice 3-and-D option for the Rockets.
