I agree, and honestly that makes things even worse for Fitz, there is no excuses for why he played so poorly.
Wishing and getting are two separate things. Keep it on your wish list buddy. It is more realistic than you'd think. Money is on the horizon bud, and money talks.
Florida St took out a $10 million insurance policy so he gets paid if he gets injured and or drops in the draft. And his father is admit that his son isn't going pro (probably because of maturity issues). Never know though. But if he did come out _ do you really think we'll be that bad to get the #1 pick...?
Eh. Carr was already on roster and the team had spent a #1 pick on him. He hadn't played under any coaches other than Capers. In comes a "QB Guru" who wants to see if his "genius" can turn him into the QB he was supposed to be. By comparison, Fitz wasn't on the roster. He was a 7th round pick, has been in the league for 9 years and has played for 4 different teams. I don't think there's a belief that Fitz was supposed to become some long term starter for us. Maybe OB believes that he play up the successes Fitz has had while limiting his faults, but that's not the same thing. I think the plan was always for him to be a placeholder and that was never the case with Carr. They were hoping that with the right coach, Carr could still be a good, long term starter.
If the Texans don't make a playoff run they will be just good enough to F themselves out of the #1 pick. And if Winston doesn't come out next year _ I don't think next year's quarterback class will be as good as this one.
So, the guys that stunk it up on Saturday get to keep their jobs but the ones that didn't even get on the field get cut?
And that's the just the problem with "wait until next year" or "we'll just get a QB next year!" As I previously said, no guarantee you'll be in position to grab Mariota or Winston or whoever the top prospect(s) is/are and no guarantee said top prospect(s) come out. Spoiler So they're left with Ryan Fitzpatrick and Case Keenum. They gotta sleep in that bed & live with it.
Why would he go back if he's draft eligible. He won the heisman and single handedly won the national championship in his freshman year. All he needs this season is solid numbers and he's a top 3 pick
Only thing is next years class is better and there aren't a lot of teams that need qb in the first round. The Texans will be in the 8-15 draft range. Maybe Marriotta and Winston will be gone but Hundley and Petty will still be there and they are both better than any qb presently on the roster
This team needs to field something respectable before JJ is up for FA! That guy is a Packer just waiting to happen. We need to make something happen.
I know, I know, next year's class is always better! And it's August. April 2013: NFL Scouts think Teddy Bridgewater could challenge Clowney for 1st overall pick in 2014 How can you be so sure? Again, it's August. Better than any QB on the roster, heh. Not sure that's really saying much.
Problem is we have to lay in that bed with them... Lol... Because his dad said so. The kid has maturity issues. Remember the rape allegation against him...??? Well there was another female that was said to have came out as well but didn't follow through. His father seems more concerned about his son becoming a mature adult than his draft position. And how often do you see a college pay for a $10 million issuance policy on a player...??? Florida St is taking care of him so he will stay IMO. You're banking on those guys getting better. Last year Logan Thomas and Boyd were at the top of the pile before the start of the college season. And Blake's tape and what he did in college is more impressive than what all of those dudes did (Johnny's and Teddy's too). And Mariota looks more like a project and Florida St has soooo much freakin talent that it's hard to really judge Winston.
And their goal in drafting somebody that high is not simply to get somebody who's "better". It's to get somebody who can be their franchise QB long term. Somebody who can eventually lead them to a super bowl. You can have somebody who's "better" but will never get you to the promised land. I mean, Ryan Tannehill is "better" than any QB on our roster, but he's probably not a guy you're comfortable trying to build a contender around for the next 10 years. And that's the deal with Fitz. Could they have drafted somebody better in this years draft? Maybe. Probably. But did they think Bortles was worth a #1? No. Did they think that Manziel, Bridgewater, or ever Carr were long term franchise QBs? Probably not. It very well might be the case than any of those would do better than Fitz or Case this year but at the same time also not be guys who can lead this team long term.
Ironically, it probably would have been better for our QB situation if we had the 10th pick instead of the 1st pick. Anyhoo, let's just hope Clowney turns into the next LT and makes us forget about all the QBs we passed over.
