Fowler is a nice player but I think he is being overvalued a tad bit. Part of the equation of being a good, productive player is staying healthy, and Fowler has shown zero ability to stay in the lineup on a regular basis for an entire season.

He is a leadoff hitter that has played in the big leagues for 5+ years and NEVER had over 570 plate appearances?? Hmm.....

If they look to move him, it certainly won't be for "nothing"... but they would be saving money by doing so (and I'm presuming they'd allocate his money elsewhere towards multiple players, not simply pocket the savings).

But that basically ends this year.

The trading deadline you're referring to would be one year from now... and this off-season is certainly fair game as some deadline trades end up being extensions of discussions already initiated in the off-season (and off-season trades are extensions of deals discussed at deadlines, etc.)

And with September call-ups looming, and Fowler's health still a total unknown, is it possible that he won't see the field again this season?

For some reason, I thought he had him for two years at a low rate. It will depend on the arbitration amount then on how the Astros handle Fowler. I don't think they will have that tight a budget next season to the point that the Astros feel they have to trade him unless he scores big in arbitration.

I do think the Astros near future is starting to take shape. I think 1B (hoping Singleton improves better than Carter has), 2B, SS, and one OF spot for the near future are spoken. Fowler probably can't be moved for a 3B or catcher significantly better than Castro or Dominguez.

I can't bring up the predictions thread we had, but I thought it was all but a lock that Fowler would play less than 120 games. The dude just doesn't finish seasons and has a reputation for it. I am more than okay with what he money he gets (and I think the franchise would be too) if he played every day. He has 3-3.5 WAR potential if he could put up 155 games at his current OBP IMO.

I wonder if it helps him or hurts him to not play the rest of this season?

I expect him to make at least $10 million/year next year.

I would gamble on Fowler. He meshes well with our team and is a fringe all-star caliber player.

I would keep him and pray that he stays healthy.

If it's ok to talk about tonight's game in the Fowler thread

We are pretty sure to see Foltynewicz tonight, Luhnow on 790 today said he will throw tonight and even mentioned he is prepared because of the piggyback system. Wonder if they are thinking about piggybacking peacock and Foltynewicz?

I wonder if Luhnow tells Porter who to start and who not to... Billy Beane style.

I'm sure they discuss pitching situations before games, but Bo makes the in game decisions. That is pretty much normal in the bigs

Altuve just keeps on keeping on

Man, if Carter would change his approach a little, and have swings like that one from time to time, he could become a nice hitter

Do you know this for sure?

I don't think many GM's try to dictate day-to-day lineup stuff (despite it being glamorized in the moneyball movie)... sure, they have to make roster moves when you have games like last night to sometimes get an extra arm up, etc.... but I doubt Luhnow is telling Bo where to bat Carter, how many innings to pitch a certain pitcher, or who to play at short, etc.

That would really be castrating the manager's job.

Peacock starting to Peacock... and Ashby annoying me in the bottom of the first (that's a new record).

No, I do not work in an mlb organization so can't be specific. I never said, nor tried to imply, that the GM was telling the manager where to bat someone. I said i'm sure they discuss pitching situations. In any case, you are right I don't know that information for sure and don't want to argue with you about it

    So.....back to the game

I wish they could have Peacock on a very short leash tonight, but after last night I doubt that is the case. Even with Folty ready to go. I think we can score some runs tonight, we were having some pretty good swings in that first inning . . .but dang Peacock

Never say never... not after Harrell actually made the starting rotation this year after looking worse last year than Peacock has now.

    Can I choose Tropeano instead?

Starting Peacock is close to just giving away games
