Scientist generally answer to others, non scientist
Just as non scientist as the theorist.
Except those non scientist pay the scientist's salaries

We've had this back and forth before, but that's not very accurate. It's others who say "well just listen to the scientists" -- not the scientists themselves.

Scientists usually will spend the time (given the chance, which is rare) to try to explain their work and their data. Whether or not they're GOOD at explaining it is another matter entirely.

As for paying their salaries, you are right, but to a decreasing extent. While Germany and China double-down on science spending, we're essentially cutting. Losing good people too. Whatever. It's a choice.

On topic, there are a lot of people in Africa who *don't* want to listen to medical professionals. They think the doctors are spreading ebola, and it's a big part of the problem, in terms of handling bodies for traditional burial rights, etc.

Gotta be a happy medium between complete mistrust and blind trust, right? Lots of turf there.

    Enough with the calm-mongering, B-Bob.

    It's very dangerous.

Everyone's body reacts differently to viruses and it's not unheard of for them to spread before symptoms are shown. How much is really know about this disease? There could be different strains that incubate differently. All it takes is for one jerk from Africa to come here, and get sick and be in denial about it, and take a subway... You can't predict how humans will react to these situations. And tons of people move around with symptoms. So regardless, this thing can spread. Stop getting all offended that you don't think through the facts bobby.

A whole lot. Don't confuse you not knowing much about it with professionals not knowing much about it.

So you think there's a several-decades long conspiracy by scientists to make up info about ebola for some unknown nefarious purpose?

The Tuskegee syphilis experiment (/tʌsˈkiːɡiː/)[1] was an infamous clinical study conducted between 1932 and 1972

LOL. Yeah, I have a lifelong problem with any "think through the facts" task. Everyone here knows it too.

Look, I don't really understand your deal with me, but you don't offend me at all. I'm only going to put you on ignore because you're wasting my time.
And, okay, because you're wise to my scheme, meddling with with my attempts at calm-mongering. As you know, your Clutchfans efforts alone stand to ruin the CDC conspiracy to spread ebola across America!

RocketRiver, thanks for the find about the serum. That's pretty remarkable, and strange too.

The CDC site is pretty good and readable, for those interested.

    http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/index.html

Level 3 travel advisory for the main three outbreak nations now, meaning no non-essential persons.

Level 2 in place now for Nigeria. Still just the one death there from the airplane guy, but they're being cautious.

Six stateside Americans have been tested for ebola so far, including a new one in Ohio. No positive tests yet, as far as I can tell anyway. The CDC has instructed hospitals nationwide to check recent travel history for anyone with certain symptoms (like high fever).

Reminds me of a quote in "My Cousin Vinny."

"Do the laws of physics cease to exist in your kitchen?"

Lmao do the well known, studied facts seem to change with your extensive and years of research with the finest medical professionals in the world, dude?

You seem like one of those wack-job conspiracy theorists, no offense. Please note the word, "seem." This means you seem, and, are....not...necessarily...one.

Just take it easy bro. No one is downplaying the seriousness of this. In all reality, not one person or even a group of people on a message board is going to start a revolution on how this illness is looked at, especially not handled.

    Bob is actually correct.

Everyone should know about this. I wish it was taught in school. You should also read all the follow up to Tuskegee, even in that wiki link, and the mechanisms created for medical ethics, informed consent, and ethical protocols for any human subjects, all as a response to Tuskegee.

For another disturbing and sad story, RocketRiver, check out the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, if you haven't already. It's an amazing book about cancer research and a woman's cancer cells that live to this day. It's also incredibly sad.

Apparently the dr that treated the American in Nigeria has died. And 5 more cases have been confirmed in Nigeria also.

I could see this spreading to every country in the world at this point. This is going to get very very bad mark my words.

I hope I'm wrong. But it's not about conspiracy. It's easy to dismiss someone talking about something you are unwilling to listen to as a theorist. By doing so, it shows how close minded you are. The ability to bring up theory is a key element of any real discussion of value. Especially when discussing that involves science. Which our understanding of, is limited.

The main idea behind my hesitation is that man kind cannot control nature. There is a reason this theme comes up in our books and movies throughout history. It's because it's a truth mankind doesn't want to accept. It's a sign of how weak we really are. A lot of people are rejecting this notion on a deeper psychological level.

Ebola is obviously a disease that can spread very quickly and very easily if left unchecked. This is one of those situations where mankind shouldn't think it can just control it with a few hazmat suits. Because so far, that isn't working in Africa. Why would that work here? Tell me how we are so much better? We have limited facilities and a degrading healthcare system. I doubt we could handle an outbreak of ebola. I'm not saying it's impossible... but it's highly doubtful, mainly because this spreads in an unpredictable way. Ebola and people are both chaotic in nature. Which is precisely why we can't control it.

The incubation period and symptoms are not an exact science and do not happen the same for everyone. Timing will be slightly different and some will feel worse than others at first, depending on their previous health. The biggest danger is when someone is first showing symptoms, which is what I've been trying to say. They are not necessarily aware of how sick they are. They are going to spread this very quickly before they are confined to a bed or hospital.

Additionally, we have created a narrative in the media that we have a cure. Someone who is thinking they have it, may try to come to America to get "cured" and bring it with them. This is how people behave. We are selfish and unpredictable.
