I just got home from seeing it and I went in with rather low expectations. It was a trip! A hell of a lot of fun. Chris Pratt was excellent, and the rest of the cast was really good. I'm getting a bit tired of seeing Zoe Saldana in science fiction flicks, but she eventually won me over. If anyone is sitting on the fence, take the plunge. Heck, it's worth seeing just for the great sound track.

    1. Quill might get a new ship in the second movie, and then they could have the lore start there (with it being sentient). I think it might have been somewhat useless to introduce a sentient ship in this first movie, since there was so much origin story to pack in. If it was a movie just about Star Lord (a la Iron Man 1) then "ship" would have been worked in.

    2. I didn't get that either - Drax is supposed to be this almost-unstoppable force (like a weaker Hulk), but he was completely schooled by Ronan in their little skirmish. Again, the second movie will probably beef up Drax a bit.

    3. Gunn and co. probably went away from an official title of "Star Lord," making it a nickname that he goes by.

I think a lot more character development will come by the way of GotG 2. I'm so glad it's getting a sequel.

First thing, Most of what is ion the movie is based more off of the recent comic rerelease of GOTG, not the classic version of said franchise. I have read all of the current comic releases, so I will do my best to answer your questions.

    1. The ship is never covered in the new run of the comic. This may come about in the future or Quill may get a new ship with such qualities later on. The only place I can think that you got the info on the ship is from the classic comic run not the current one.

    2. In the current comic run Drax's story is the one found in the movie. His family was killed. He is seeking revenge, and I think that is when he allowed himself to altered to be stronger. I definitely see his character as a Thanos plot device to continue to move more towards him as the story continues.

    3. This part is the hardest for me to swallow. In the current comic run Peter Quill's mom did not die of cancer, but was shot by Kreel thugs. Peter becomes an orphan we don't know yet how he got into space. His father is a King of part of the universe whose ship broke down on earth where he stayed with Peter's mom and they copulated before he left. He left her his elemental gun which eventually she gave to Peter when he got older. In the movie they allude to Peter's father when the mercs said his dad would be mad they didn't bring him in. His father is a huge part of the story as it goes on.

There is so much more to the GOTG universe you should really read the new comic series. One of my favorites. tpb is your friend.

He was already Darkseid in the Justice League cartoon, and with Thanos being a rip off of Darkseid, it would call too much attention to that.

Not me. I thought the first one was an instant classic while the 2nd one was absolute greatness especially with the way it ended with such finality with Emil Minty's soliloquy. Thunderdome absolutely stunk on every level starting with the casting and I compare it to Terminator 3 which also blew chunks. In fact both movie series should have ended with the 2nd installments - especially Terminator.

The new MM looks real pretty but doesn't appear to have that edge of bleak despair that permeated the first two. It wasn't that you could see that the world was in chaos, you could feel it in every frame. Having seen the ComicCon footage, I feel that Hill has lost this important perspective by choosing to focus on action and visuals and as a result Fury Road just feels hollow to me.

Does this catapult Chris Pratt's career? Will he get to be fat again?

No, I can see where he's coming from. I am a huge fan of classic sci-fi books by Clarke, Heinlein, Bova, E.E. "Doc" Smith, Saberhagen, Woods, D.F. Jones, et al and as a rule, these types of film adaptations were more literal back when the CGI technology didn't exist to the degree it does now. Back then, with those films, you really had to mentally visualize the message that film was trying to convey. Now, it's done for you in 3D and IMAX. Not saying that it was better back then compared to now, just different. Today, more and more, the visual effects have come to replace rather than amplify the narrative. That said, GOTG did about the best job I've seen so far in balancing the two which I found refreshing.

Maybe not. Gunn said at ComicCon that only 4 people really know the identity of Star Lord's father so it doesn't look like it will be J'on in the GOTG films.

He was pretty good in GotG scenes where it called for him to tear up.

We all knew he could do comedy, but to be able to pull off emotional scenes too? Dude is gonna be really good.

When Parks and Rec ends, I can see a lot of TV comedies wanting him for their series.

    We 'members.

When I saw that movie I thought the girl in charge of all those orphans was really cute. Then I googled her and found out she was like fifty years old now! I'm 29; I doubt most people my age are watching Mad Max movies. Road Warrior maaaybe, but definitely not #1.

    Not sure why you think that;
he basically flat out said in the next movie, Yondu will capture him and bring him to his dad.

Sci-fi film in spite of its forward gaze actually tells you a lot more about the past, namely the era that brought the film into being. From the space operas of the 50's to the exponential projections buoyed by the Moon Landing in the 60's (people actually did think we would be able to go to Jupiter by 2001), we really do get a sense of the time, probably even more so than we would from a period piece made to replicate that atmosphere.

By the late 70's and early 80's the future warms up to us. Flying cars, hover boards, 3d goggles, virtual reality, video games that house whole civilizations inside. Aliens come to visit us and they are friendly. Robots are comically benign interpreter droids, or they walk around with tank treads and yell out, “NEED MORE INPUT!”

By the late 80’s and early 90’s, disenchantment which had already been pervading large pockets of literature, music, and politics finally makes its way into film. Utopia gives way to dystopia. We begin to focus on ways in which technology goes wrong, on how subversive elements can infuse themselves into all elements of our daily living. Robots are now the enemy. We fight back invading aliens with nuclear bombs. We question the intentions of ever-ubiquitous corporations. We see virtual reality as another means of control.

By the turn of the millennium we can see no hope before us. We think of all the ways that the future, hurtling towards us, will presage our demise. An asteroid will hit the earth. The sun will expire. Women will be unable to bear children. Or perhaps more scathingly, our very nature will be our death. Climate change. Global warming. The dumbing down of the average person. And declining health: we will all go obese and a robot will have to teach us how to get off our recliners.

I think sci-fi today has the potential to be just as good as it always has. You just have to choose the right movies, actually, more like the right directors. The stories on the other hand...it's been thirty years since Philip Dick died, and still we are stuck, unable to get past him. The Japanese got us beat right now, but we'll be back.

Thanos: Nova Prime never told you what happened to your father, did she?

Star Lord: (hanging to platform with his remaining hand, tucking stump of other arm under opposite armpit) She told me enough! She told me YOU killed him!

Thanos: No! (dramatic pause, brandishes clenched fist) I am your father.

Star Lord: Give me a break. I mean, look at you, Grape Ape. Look at me. Do I look half purple to you?

Thanos: Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

Star Lord: Hold up. So you're saying, you came to Earth and did my mom. (Ugh, that's so gross, my mom was such a w****.) Does this make me Saviour of the Galaxy? Like, Galaxy Jesus or something?

Do you think he'll star in more bigger budget films? Though I like him, I never saw him as a star that could lead a film. But, record box office numbers say otherwise (though, I guess this was more of an ensemble, still he seemed to be top billed).

Also, this is another big box office movie for Zoe Saldana.

Well OK! Either you've been reading science fiction as long as I have, or simply have good taste and an appreciation of the classics of the genre. In any event, kudos! Also, I agree about Guardians of the Galaxy. Like I said earlier, the flick was a trip. A very refreshing change from the usual. I'm looking forward to the next one.

I'll never look at a tree again in the same way.
