Good point, I think boston offered him more money but he wanted to contend. With two years left and that not likely to happen now I think out of respect to a guy who's worked hard for that organization they would look to find a mutually benificial place for him in exchange for assets that make sense for a reloading team.
We can trade for West, keep him this whole season and IF, we can get A REAL confirmation from a free agent who wants to sign with us next off season, we can off load him like we did with Asik and Lin, as West will be expiring next off season. So West wouldn't really hurt our free agency flexibility. I'd definitely love to trade for West if the price is right. If we indeed are able to get Dragic (with TPE) I can definitely see a deal with the Pacers centered around either Jones or Motiejunas, and Beverley plus non guaranteed contracts for West. My fantasy trade idea Spoiler Jones, Capela, Rights to Papanikolaou and Pelicans 2015 1st for Dragic (TPE) Beverley, Motiejunas, Rockets 2017 first and non guaranteed contracts for West and Copeland Dragic/Canaan/Smith Harden/Daniels/Johnson Ariza/Copeland West/Adrian Howard/Dorsey Just would need to upgrade our bench with MLE and BAE. http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=n5fk65x
Valid question but it's not unlike the question that would be asked for any player in trade. If he doesn't want to be traded and to stay with his team then there's no trade to be made. But it's a question that should be asked of him now that the outlook has changed dramatically.
I assume the question is being asked; and what will the answer be? If on the market, what would DW bring back to Pacers? Would Bird et al prefer to deal Hibbert first? If so, where could they send him? Amare? (How about Amare/Dalembert/Shump/Larkin for Hibbert/Hill/Scola/Allen???)
They may prefer to deal hibbert but I'd think whether they do or not is a separate question from what to do with west. If west wants to go to a contender than I'd assume the list would be limited to WC teams that are top 4 or 5 that need a starting PF. That takes out SAS, OKC, LAC and POR unless wants to play backup 4 and 5. If that's the case OKC might be a good fit. If West wants to finish out his career competing for a title and contributing I'd have to think we're on the short list for ideal matches.
Of course the Pacers would like a younger player that can contribute nearly the same as West in a years time, but how many team is in a position to do that? If they already have a such a promising young talent, they might as well just keep them. If the said young talent is and will likely be much worse than West in a years time, the Pacers might as well just keep him around till George is back next year. Also just how valuable is the Pelican's pick anyways, it'll most likely be a late lottery or worse. The chances of getting a good player that late in the draft is pretty damn low. For every good mid to late 1st round draft selection, there's literally 10 other complete duds.
Morey isn't trying to have the most flexibility and cap space possible. He's not going to tie it up on David West. And David West is coming here on a one year deal. So not happening.
A lot of flaws in the logic of these points: We are and that's the point. The windows and goals of the two teams are different and complimentary. Jones needs another year or two to start hitting his potential. That's just the right window for IND now. We need someone to contribute at a veteran level now for the next two years with Dwight, while not hindering the ability to upgrade in 2016 (hence the ideal two year contract). Switching the two players fits each team better for what they're doing. More specifically to your question, if we have such a promising young talent like Jones why not just keep him? Well I'm sure a number of fans here would prefer that and wait to see Jones develop. Crash has a good thread on this very point. I'm making a case for trading that potential for something more certain now in West. They could but the reason this is even being discussed is because keeping West around doesn't quite fit their goals right now. PG is out for at least a year, and the second year he'll probably be getting back into form. West's contract expires after that, so it makes some reasonable sense to send him to a contender in exchange for players that can contribute in two years when they can reasonable expect PG to come back and contend themselves. The pick is protected up and down so it's guaranteed to be between 3-20. The value is determined by what other picks are available and being traded on the market. Teams with top 10 picks in the 2015 draft aren't placing their picks on the market in trade and if they do their certainly looking for players of higher caliber than West.
Having difficulty understanding what you're saying. West would come on a two year contract (assuming he picks up his player option). But you're saying a one year deal so how would that be tying up cap space? Even on a two year deal how would that be tying up cap space? Who do you think he'd pursue in FA next year?
David West is NOT the answer...he's not the stretch 4 that Morey is looking for and the main part of his game is the 16-18ft shot that is non existent in this offense...not to mention he doesn't help the spacing with Dahwhite Howard Plus Morey isn't about to mess up his cap flexibility on this guy...would much rather roll with T. Jones!!
You understand that West is an excellent mid range shooter correct? Mid range shots, whether we take them frequently or not, space out the floor plenty, nearly as much a 3pt shots do.
i would trade one of our current PF and a 2nd rounder to them. I think that would make us a contender.
Not good in transition but decent in half-court covering face-up 4's. Uses strength well against bigger 4's also. He's not a big time runner. Won't help offensive break. Won't help transition defense.
That shot existed in our offense when Patrick Patterson was here, if I remember correctly. It's just that right now we don't have anyone who can shoot that shot at a high enough percentage to make it worth it.
