That was my initial point. Like I said, everyone is entitled to their opinion, even that gentleman. It's just a stupid argument though.

Thanks for that! :) And he didn't say it sucked. He said it was pretty fun.

But yes, his examples of "good" plots don't exactly make sense. And moreoever, the "acting" in Pacific Rim was about as bad as it gets.

Anyway, I just hate these threads where anyone who doesn't like something (or, alternately, anyone who likes something others dislike), gets shouted down. Movie love is pretty subjective.

I'm someone who really hates deus ex machina stuff in general. So I sympathized with that part of his complaint. And in this case, I guess I am just looking for an excuse to skip watching a raccoon talk and shoot a gun.

Technically he started it off by saying "I'm gonna go ahead and say it. Put me on the 10% of guys who didn't like the movie."

So like I said, he contradicts himself the entire way.

I don't have a problem with people not liking it. It's an odd movie.
There's definitely something to be said about certain people who will complain about anything. He strikes me as this type of fellow, that's why I made the beer comment.

Also simplifying the movie down to a talking Raccoon shooting a gun, is about as big of an oversimplification as you can make. Anyway, have fun not seeing the movie. :)

I think people that have watched Anime, Cartoons, or have read graphic novels before will appreciate GotG a lot more because it looks like a live action version of those media. No pandering to the jackholes that want it to be moderately believable and gritty; just pure fantasy action and plot.

I loved it and the fact that it didn't take itself too seriously. Really interested to see which style and pace overlaps the other when Avengers and GotG meet.

The Marvel universe movies (to me) are everything the X-men / Spider-man / Fantastic Four movies aren't to me. They take everything I love about the comics and make them real. There are changes made to fit the narrative, but the changes generally make sense. As opposed to...hey...we need to make screentime for Jennifer Lawrence or Hugh Jackman.

I accept that it's not for everyone. It's absolutely for me, though.

I like Iron Man. Thor was ok, I never finished Thor 2. Captain America was ok and Captain America 2 had good action but just could not get into it. I was one of the few that was not a fan of Avengers, just thought it was too sloppy. I would love another Hulk movie though. I liked the Edward Norton and Eric Bana versions for some reason even. With all of that said, I loved Guardians of the Galaxy. It was executed perfectly. Great mixture of action and comedy.

Not a super hero movie, it's more along the lines of Star Wars.

    Fantastic piece of cinema.

I think you'll regret not seeing GotG. It's a fantastic movie.

And iirc, Rocket Raccoon, with gun in hand, shoots it twice in the entire movie. It could even be just the one time in the "Oh. Yeahhhhh." scene, but he might have shot a gun later.

When people are saying Rocket and / or Drax steals every scene they're in, it's not a negative. They could make a whole movie based on Rocket and I'd watch that.

Okay. I think I'm coming around once someone mentioned Star Wars, which was actually a very funny movie, and that's one of the main things I loved about it.

There is a buddy of mine who wants to see it, so we'll go catch a late show sometime soon.

Yeah, I was highly skeptical when I saw trailers with a talking raccoon, but my friends convinced me to go and I enjoyed it- even though I normally don't like movies like these.

Did anybody think of Star Fox when Rocket Raccoon was in his mining pod? Star Fox vs Rocket Raccoon anyone?

As much as I love Star Fox, I think Rocket would **** him up.

Good movie. Like others have said, I'll need to watch it again because the audience was laughing so hard that I miss the tail end of some jokes.

    1. Captain America, Winter Soldier
    2. Iron Man 1
    3. Guardians of the Galaxy
    4. The Avengers
    5. Thor 2

Yes, in many ways it is more comparable to a Han Solo and Chewbacca focused Star Wars movie, or a futuristic Raiders of the Lost Ark more so than a super hero movie.

    Some questions:

Ok, so, when it was announced that this movie was coming out, it was yet another Marvel movie for which I had no background - I was not a reader of any comics which ever contained these characters. So, over the last year, I read up on them a bit, by following through Wikipedia pages and so forth, at least in order to know who these people were and whet the general gist was supposed to be, what the tone was supposed to be, etc etc.

It was clearly intended from the get-go as a concept which was not meant to be taken too seriously - a walking tree, a maniacal raccoon, green-skinned assassin, etc etc.

I know that it all tied into past and future histories, and into the 'Cosmic' Marvel universe which was more science fiction/fantasy than actual 'Super Heroes'.

    And that's all fine.

But I am interested to know some things from those of you who were actual readers and who know the minute details.

So, I have some general questions for you gurus..

    1. The "Ship'. As I understood it from reading about the comics, Star Lord's 'Ship' is supposed to be an actual sentient being, or at least a sentient computer, which in essence made it another full-fledged character in the comics. It could shape-shift, act and think on its own, and occasionally even walk around among them as another member of their 'team'.

But the movie apparently did away with ALL of that. So, am I off base on this, or did I miss something, or am I mis-remembering the stuff about the comics?

    2. Drax. Again, as I understood it, Drax was 'specifically bred for the purpose of destroying Thanos'. Something special and specific about Drax is there deliberately and specifically in order to be able to defeat and ultimately kill Thanos.

In the movie, Draz is just some big muscle-bound guy who is mad about Ronan killing his wife and child - there seemed to be nothing there about Drax being anything any more special than that. Any help on this one?

    3. Star Lord. As I understood it, 'Star Lord' is an actual real title, kinda-sorta the equivalent of the Green Lanterns, as sort-of rightfully-empowered 'Space Cops' or something to that effect. Supposedly Peter Queill somehow lied/cheated his way into the Star Lord title, but he happens to now be a good honorable guy, so it's apparently no big deal.

But again, the movie seems to alter this completely, and opts instead for Quill to be more than just a regular human - he is now supposedly the child of an alien/human coupling, and thus his 'Star Lord' name is something he calls HIMSELF because his mother called him that in a letter.

So, what is it? Is it a real title, or just something he calls himself? Did his mother know his father was a 'real' Star Lord? Did she die due to complications of being involved with the alien?

I'll probably think of more questions as we go along, but I wanted to throw these out there.. I really enjoyed the movie, and will probably see it a few more times. Thanks for filling in the gaps guys..

They changed things to fit the movie. They've done it for all the stories. For example in Age of Ultron, Ultron will be created by Tony Stark instead of Hank Pym.

I'm sure they will add other things as they go, things that don't fit will be done away with. Another example is Yondu, he's almost an entirely different character with exceptions. Cosmo is in the movie, and is a russian dog, but certainly doesn't speak to anyone telepathically.

    1. See above.

    2. They'll delve more into his background as well as Rocket's in the next movie. In the movie they made Ronan kill his family, whereas in the comics it's Thanos. This is why in the end of the movie, he said he really needs to kill him and not Ronan. He's also a human being who is killed by Thanos -- as opposed to very much an alien -- and has a new body created for him by Thanos' father. (who wants Thanos dead, obviously)

    3. It is his title, they wanted to make it work in the confines of the movie. No, it has nothing to do with a Corps or whatever. That would be the Nova corps in this case. His title is because he's prince of the Spartax. His mother did know, that's why she called him her little StarLord in his letter, and also mentions he "came out of pure light".

1- no clue but it's possible that the writers left this out due to screen time and/or avoiding cliches- there are a TON of sentient spaceships in modern Sci-Fi. Or they may set up the sentient ship in GotG 2.

2- That was one of my nerd gripes. The whole Drax/Thanos thing might be revealed later in one of the other Marvel movies as a plot progression device. He's certainly more of a badass than was offered in the movie.

3a- If you watch the movie again, you will notice that when Peter opens the card from his mom, she calls him her "little Star Lord". That's where he got it (in the movie).

3b- I think you might be confusing the Nova Corps with Star Lord. The Nova Corps are a space cop group with super powers. That was another of my nerd gripes- where the heck were the flying Nova Corps?

Watched it and liked it. I had way too high expectations for the movie. I had been hyped for it since it was announced. They did well for an origin story and I know the sequel will be amazing. Marvel has done very well with their sequels(except Iron Man2).

They definitely got the feel of doing an epic space movie right! Star Wars needs to take some notes.

One last thing is I didn't care for the sound of Thanos' voice. They should've just got Keith David or Michael Ironside for his voice and called it a wrap.
